Front crankshaft modern seal
Helping a friend stop a leak at the front of his pan. We removed the pan with new seals and gaskets in hand. Examining the new modern front seal I find it has no markings on it and the lip of the seal, the part that actually does the sealing of the crank pulley, is slightly offset. That is depending on which way one installs it the seal can be a tad over an 1/8 inch forward or backward of its position if you installed it facing the opposite direction. I believe he got it from Snyder's and we found no directive on which way it is supposed to face. Or perhaps it makes no difference, it appears both sides of the lip are pitched at the same angle. The difference would appear to me to be how far fore or aft one prefers to have the sealing take place on the pulley. Any advice, thought or speculation on this?
Thanks in advance. We plan to ask Snyder's tomorrow, but want a second opinion also. |

Re: Front crankshaft modern seal
Peel the seal lip back to see the garter spring.
The garter spring side of the seal should be internal to the engine. |
