28 Phaeton Top Iron holes?
In the attached photo (not of my car BTW) I have highlighted two holes in the top irons. My car is currently in the upholstery shop and the guy seems to think that there should be a bracket / u-bolt? or connection of some sort that goes in both of these holes to ensure that the top is rigid when opened. I have searched the Forum but have not come across a reference to these holes any where.
Do they have a purpose? Am I in need of a part? Cheers John Last edited by JohninKuranda; 08-07-2016 at 05:10 AM. Reason: Typo! |

Re: 28 Phaeton Top Iron holes?
Hi John, my top irons also have the same holes but I don't know what they are for. My hood has been done for twenty two years and has survived well without any brace in that location. The hood is kept firm by the webbing that runs from the rear bow down to the top edge of the rear tub. I have never seen any vehicle with a brace in that location. I also would be interested if there is something missing.

Re: 28 Phaeton Top Iron holes?
A couple years ago, I was investigating side curtains for my 28 phaeton. I believe those holes are for a stud installed in one of the side curtains. I also recall that the instructions from Lebaron or Mac's gave me some insight.
Never did do the side curtains, its quicker to put on the rain jacket. |

Re: 28 Phaeton Top Iron holes?
I am with Phred on this one. They are probably used for side curtain top snaps. Note in the picture of Dean Drenzek's early phaeton, the holes have a side curtain part in the holes and the rear side curtain is snapped to the part in the hole. I don't know what part is used in the holes. Maybe someone can enlighten us. I have a 29 phaeton that will need them. Good post.

Sorry that I don't have photos to explain what I mean. A495 is in the Gilmore Museum. Unfortunately that is over 1,500 miles away. |

Re: 28 Phaeton Top Iron holes?
For our 1930 Phaeton, LeBarron Bonney's side curtain directions were accurate and spot on for installing our side curtains. Mac's directions were terribly wrong for the side curtain fasteners used and their locations. The top iron holes in the first posting are for the side curtain fasteners. Look at another phaeton using side curtains and it will all become clear to you.

Many thanks to all the posters for the information given in response to my query. Another issue confronted, another issue solved.
