Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
The 1946-1948 Canadian Mercury 114. You will notice that the Canadian Mercury 114 is built on same 114" wheelbase as the regular Ford Deluxe and Super Deluxe models. The "true" Mercury (and the only one offered in the USA) was built on an extended 118" wheelbase. As a result, when you look closely, you can see that the Grille on the Canadian Mercury 114 is much flatter than the regular Mercury (118"). Compare these two closeup pictures of the Grilles. The Canadian Mercury 114 uses the same bumper bar front and rear, while the front bumper on the regular Mercury comes to a definite point in the centre. The regular Mercury on the 118" wheelbase was also sold in Canada, so buyers got a choice of two different Mercurys in various body styles. |

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
Sharp eyed Ford Barners will notice that this Australian 1946 Mercury is fitted with the same year Ford Bumper Guards, (modified to fit the bottom bulge of the Mercury Bumper) not the correct Mercury Bumper Guards, as fitted to the USA Mercurys. Sad to say, but these were the only ones fitted to all Australian assembled 1946-1948 Mercurys. Another anomaly, is that all Australian assembled 1946-1948 Mercurys were fitted with the standard 1946 Ford Deluxe/Super Deluxe rear Bumpers. After offering a more deluxe Ford, it is disappointing that Ford Australia chose to short-cut and fit these regular Ford items. |

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
Thanks Trev. for pointing out the not so subtle differences between the two Mercs. It has been referred to (don't ask me where) that the hood ornament on the CDN model has art deco influence as well as the face of Mercury on the grille. Comments? Anyone ever meet Art Deco? Also for "47 on the glove box door there is "Mercury 114X" on the stainless trim. Useless trivia for sure! Good for 10 more HP.
s a Canadian don't know if I'm biased but I prefer the shorter sheet metal on the front clip as it makes the car look less heavy. JMHO. Bill |

Here is a "close-up" of that Mercury Head that appears on the Grilles of the Canadian Mercury 114 models. Is this what people are calling Art-Deco? |

Here is a picture of an Australian 1947 Mercury showing the 1946 Ford Rear Bumper and Bumper Guards that were Factory fitted to all Australia assembled 1946 - 1948 Mercurys. It is unknown why Ford Australia decided to cheapen the car by doing this? |

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
I should clarify myself in the above comment about about all Australian Assembled 1946 - 1948 Mercurys having 1946 Ford Bumpers and Bumper Guards.
There was one difference, in that the "Ford Script" that was stamped in the middle of the 1946 Ford Bumpers was not on the Rear Bumpers used on the Australian 1946 Mercury. Also, the "Ford Script" disappeared on the Ford Deluxe and Ford Super Deluxe rear Bumpers in 1947. |

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
Some might consider the Canadian 114 to be the predecessor to the Meteor introduced in 1949. Basically a Ford with a Mercury grille.

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
Ralph, I believe that you are 100% correct, however, the Meteor was never ever called a Mercury Meteor by Ford. it was just Meteor. The same can be said about the Monarch. While they were sold in Ford Dealerships, they were never called a Ford Monarch. Thanks for the 1950 Meteor Advertisement. All good for learning about these Canadian specific cars from Ford and Mercury. |

Hi Ralph, I have enlarged this 1949 Advertisement for the Monarch and Ford. Thanks for confirming what I said about the Meteor and Monarch, in that they were never called a Mercury Meteor or Ford Monarch by the Ford Motor Company of Canada. |

I really like those Formercs" in the brochures. It reminds me of when I was on a high school band trip to Winnipeg in 1957; the streets were full of "Plodges".

Centre pages of the Sales Brochure for the Canadian 1949 Meteor. This is the car that replaced the Mercury 114. Notice that there is no mention of Mercury anywhere. These new for 1949 Meteors were just called Meteor. |

Not sure that is totally correct on the Meteor. Had to do more with trade relations with Canada at the time and Canada developing cars. Kind of consistent for decades of ford.

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
Ralph, You summed up the situation perfectly, when you wrote:-
"The reason was that Lincoln Mercury dealerships were separate from Ford. LM needed a car for the buyer that couldn't afford a Mercury or a Lincoln so the Meteor was introduced. The same dealership could sell you a Mercury truck. Ford dealerships wanted something a little more classy to offer customers who had a little more money to spend without sending them down the road to the Lincoln Mercury dealerships. So the Monarch filled that gap. Just a re-badged Mercury really." Thanks for your clarification about these misunderstood Canadian cars. Regards Mercman <>< |

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
That's not true though. Even in America the Lincoln/Merc dealerships where separate. They did cross over here. But It had to do with trade. It had nothing to do about what you could afford. Ford is a big company that had many brands under them. Volvo was a ford car also. Just for patents. The general ford line was not used in Canada due to trade.

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
Maybe you Canadians guys can help out and can name at least a dozen Canadian car builders from 1920-1950 that have gone under. Probably a forum for it.
I love the Meteor and Monarch. But the base of how it was created was trade laws. Less you guys could buy a 1953 ford customline off fords line, oh ya they are Meteor with badging changes. No more and no less. Last edited by Tinker; 12-30-2020 at 01:33 AM. |

Ford kept it interesting. For 51 the Meteor got it's own grille, no longer able to fit the big Mercury grille in the Ford front end. By 52 the top line Meteors got the Mercury engine and dash. We never had six cylinder engines offered until 1955 as far as I know. Also Fords kept the flathead through 1954. Meteor also. This is a locally owned 53 Meteor, top of the line Customline with the Merc engine and dash. Shows up at the local car show every year.

Another US poster here mentioned the "Plodges" he saw while north of the border, these were also assembled here in the NZ Chrysler plant (Todd Motors). Another interesting fact is that in Australia the 55/56 ford body style was carried over into the later 50's with a model known locally (probably colloquially) as a Ford "Star" because it had a huge star in the grill which I believe was picked off the Canadian Meteor/ Monarch...... Mercman will know for sure and will be able chime in on this one GB

That would explain the "Cheviacs" too. Pontiacs with Chevy sheet metal and Pontiac engines. A neighbour had a nice 52 Pontiac coupe that looked a lot like a Chevy until you looked under the hood and saw the flathead six.

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
This is the Cover of the Australian Sales Brochure for the new 1958 Fords that Ralph referred to. They were based on the 1956 model, as Australia never got the "true" 1957 and 1958 model Fords. As they were a "carry-over" model, Ford Australia had to do something different so people would know that they were a new car. The Grille is from the 1955 Meteor while the side strips are from the 1956 Meteor. These days, people refer to this model as the "Star Model" Ford. |

Another Canadian Mercury 114 Grille showing the Mercury Head that is unique to these Canadian Mercury 114 models. The larger Mercurys that were available in the USA, all on a 118 inch Wheelbase didn't have this Symbol. This symbol is unique to the Canadian only Mercury 114 model. |

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
Here is a larger picture of that 1953 Meteor Dash. It is unusual that the 54 Meteor got a completely different dash? I know that in the USA, the 54 Fords got a new Dash, but in Australia, they retained the 52-53 Dash, as well as the Flathead V8 Engine. Question - What does the Dash of the Canadian 1954 Ford Customline look like? Did it have the carry-over 52-53 Dash, or did it get the new Dash like in the 1954 USA Fords? |

Here is a photo of an Australian RHD 1954 Ford Customline Dash. Notice that it is the carry-over style from 1952-1953. The 1954 Fords in USA got a completely new Astra-Dome Dash. The style was carried over to the new 1955 Fords and Australia got the new Dash in our local 1955 Ford Customlines. So, what did the Dash look like on the Canadian 1954 Fords? |

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
From my observation, I believe that all Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114 models got the full length chrome strip on the Hood. On the same era "large" Mercury USA models (built on the 118 " Wheelbase) in early 1947, the Chrome Strip on the Hood was shortened with a Block with the block letters Mercury appearing just in front of the short chrome strip. |

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
My first car was a 1950 Meteor. I also owned a 53 meteor... I have a book produced by Ford Canada.
In this book it states that Ford Canada needed more dealers, as we had a smaller population back then, so they came up with the idea of a different model so they could have more than just one Ford dealership in the vast rural towns.. So the Mercury Monarch and Meteor dealerships became a different idea that way they could have more than one dealership in the same town... Monarch. Meteor and Mercury, Trucks became became another option to try and sell more cars, they were Canadian made only... As for NZ and Australia, Most of their Ford products came From Canada they were all part of the British Empire. They had no trade deals with the US... |

Don't know how to enlarge a picture from my avaitor but I can't help but wonder how the workers felt about the different models looked so much alike. There were likely some mistakes made on a Monday morning or Friday afternoon.

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
We had a Ford Monarch dealership in town. Lincoln-Mercury and Meteor were a separate dealer from Ford- Monarch. i imagine its pretty confusing for those outside of Canada. I have enough trouble myself keeping all the info in my head. Lucky I have the vintage ads to look at.

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
We all know that the USA 1946-1948 Mercurys that were built on the 118" Chassis all came with 15" Wheels. The same year Ford Deluxe and Ford Super Deluxe had 16" Wheels.
Can anybody tell me what size Wheels were standard on the similar year Canadian Mercury 114 models. Was it 15" or 16" |

In '64 I owned a '46 114 Merc sedan, black, identical to the one shown by Ralph in post # 48. Mine even had a Fulton sunvisor! To the best of my recollection (Well it wuz the 60s) the rim size was 16". Traded it for a '35 three window. Would love to relive that transaction... Bill

I'll have to check my 1929-1949 Ford Fast moving parts catalogue as i think it might have the answer to wheel size.

Checked my fast moving parts catalogue and it looks like long wheelbase cars got the 15 inch wheels while short wheelbase (114-116 inch) got the 16 inch wheels. Here is the page

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
The front views show the difference in the 114 and 118. The 114 looks like a Ford with a Mercury grille. Which is pretty much what the 49 Meteor was. `

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
I have another question. When you compare the front and rear pictures of this Canadian 1948 Mercury 114 Coupe, the Front and Rear Bumpers seem to be exactly the same? On the 118 " Mercury, the front Bumper comes to a distinct point at the centre and is a totally different from the Rear Bumper . My question is are both the Front and Rear Bumpers on the Mercury 114 shared? |

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
In Post 64, I suggested that the Front and Rear Bumpers for the Canadian Mercury 114 were one and the same. In other words, the same Part Number Bumper was used in both positions. Now, in a previous Post, this lovely 1948 Mercury 114 Sedan Coupe was submitted. However, now that I look at it closely, I believe that it has the wrong Front Bumper for the Mercury 114 models. I would suggest that the Front Bumper on this example is off the regular "full size" Mercury that were on the 118" Wheelbase. Compare the above two photos. Am I right or wrong? |

I think you are right. That bumper with the turned up "ears" at each end only shows up on the full size 47-48 Mercury in my books.

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
Looking at that Monarch in Post 70, I think that the lower Grille Pieces are off a Mercury, as they have two bars, while on the Monarch, they only have a single bar. Am I correct? |

According to the Zavitz book some Monarchs did come with the extra lower grille bar so this one could be original.

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
Canadian 1947 Mercury 114 Sedan. Compare the Front & Rear Bumpers. They appear to be identical? The Front Bumpers on the USA and Canadian Mercury with the 118" Wheelbase have a completely different Front Bumper. On these 118" Mercs, the Bumpers are not interchangeable. However, it is my belief that on the Mercury 114 models, they are? |

Does anyone in Canada have a Parts Book that they can check up the Part Numbers for the Front and Rear Bumpers on these Canadian Mercury 114 models? It would be interesting to know if they are the same Part Number?

Hi ford38v8, Thanks for thinking of me, but before we add Postage, the cost to me would living in Australia would be around A$230. Imagine the Postage cost? I think that I will have to live without a copy of that book. Luckily, I have a personally signed copy by R. Perry Zavitz of his Monarch Meteor Book. A really informative book by Perry. |

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
This is the Cover of the Canadian 1946 Monarch Sales Brochure. The Monarch is based on the Full Size Mercury that rode on a 118 Inch Wheelbase. It lacked the Mercury name, and was sold in Ford Dealers as a Monarch. Similarly, the same year Mercury 114 was actually based on the regular Ford Deluxe - Super Deluxe and rode on a 114 Inch Wheelbase, but in this case, this vehicle had Mercury Badges. Thus, both the Ford Dealers and the Mercury Dealers each had two distinct vehicles to see, one riding a 114 Inch Wheelbase and the other a 118 Inch Wheelbase. The Mercury 114 and the Monarch were only available in Canada. |

Newc, The Illustration that I added above was for the Monarch, not the Mercury 114. You will realise that the Short Door Coupe was never available in the "big" Mercury. I will dig up a photo from the Sales Brochure showing both Coupes, the Long and Short Door Models for the Mercury 114.

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
I thought some might like a few facts about my car. I could add that it is a numbers matching car and that I painted the car its correct Parrot Green colour. It also has these options, radio, heater, fog lights, backup light controlled by the gear shift when its placed in reverse, wing tips, gas guard and trim rings The only item added was signal lights. I have owned it for 20 years in April /21. I traced the previous owners back to when it was new. I'm the 4th caretaker of my Monarch and will be given to my Grandson when the time comes to stop driving. I managed to put about 23000 happy miles on it since my ownership.

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
Rear shot of the same Canadian Monarch Convertible as appears in the previous Post. Another picture compliments of MyStarCollectorCar. What is interesting in the photo is that while the Monarch was based on the 118" wheelbase Mercury, it still retained the regular Ford Tail Lights. That was because the Monarch was sold in Ford Dealerships. Another interesting point is the position of the Bumper Guards on the rear. On the same model Mercury, they were spaced wider apart, added to where you can see the Bumper Bolt. Apparently, in an effort to make a distinction between the Mercury and Monarch, they chose to locate the Bumper Guards in different locations on the two models, so that they did not look the same. Just a thought? |

1949 Monarch Sedan - Thanks Ralph for sharing. What is unusual is that in 1949, for the first time, Lincoln offered a more economical Lincoln that used the Mercury body but with a longer front clip, in addition to the regular upmarket Lincoln. |

I received this shot of a '46 Mercury 114 Station Wagon taken in Oceanside, California from a friend. It was taken ten years ago. It sat outside in Alberta Canada for years before it made its way to California. These 1946-1948 Mercury 114 models don't come any rarer than this. |

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114

Post-War Fords - Mercury 114 In 1939, the 703 Ford dealers across Canada sold both Fords and Mercurys. A few dealers sold Lincolns. After World War II, Ford of Canada split their dealer network into two divisions. Existing dealers sold Ford, the new Monarch, and Ford trucks. A new branch of dealers sold Mercurys, imported Lincolns, and a new line of Mercury trucks. By 1947, Ford Motor Company of Canada had 1,113 dealers, 353 of which were Mercury-Lincoln outlets. Because Ford was in the low-priced field, it was more popular in Canada than the medium-priced Mercury. So that the new Mercury dealers could get a piece of the low-priced action, a smaller lower cost Mercury line emerged. This new Mercury needed a name to set it apart from its larger sibling. So, it bore the title Mercury 114 - a reference to its Ford wheelbase in inches. Therefore, the larger Mercury was known in Canada as the Mercury 118, its wheelbase length. This new car was really a Ford, but with Mercury-style grille, tail-lights and trim. For the grille to fit onto the Ford front, it had a totally different frame around the vertical Mercury bars. Below this grille was a chrome section with two long openings which substituted the lower air-intakes of the Mercury 118 design. A unique point on the 114's grille was an embossed head of the god Mercury just below the "Mercury" nameplate. Another 114 grille feature was the lack of E-I-G-H-T spelled down the middle. There were small round parking lights below the headlights of the Mercury 114. The shape and location of these lights bore no likeness to either the 1946 Ford or Mercury 118 parking lights. For 1947 and 1948 however, Ford used the Mercury 114 type parking lights. Chrome trim on the 114's fenders consisted of double strips which were more like the 1942 Mercury than the 1946. Because of the pucker on Ford's front fenders, these chrome strips did not come all the way forward to the headlight rims as on the 118. The Mercury 114 used tail-lights like those on the 118. But there were no chrome strips across the trunk door, which the 118 had. Instead, there was a chrome embellished trunk handle below the license plate bracket. A Mercury nameplate appeared above it. Ford V-8 engines powered the Mercury 114. Displacement started at 221 cubic inches. After June 1946, 1/8th inch was added to the bore for a 239.4 cu. in. displacement. There were some unexplained discrepancies about output. Horsepower ratings were in the area of 93 to 100, unaffected by displacement changes. Like Ford, the Mercury 114 came in DeLuxe and Super DeLuxe editions. DeLuxe offered Fordor Sedan, Tudor Sedan, and business coupe. Super DeLuxe (aka Mercury 114X) added a 6-passenger Sedan Coupe, convertible, and station wagon. List prices for the 1946 Mercury 114 ranged from $1166 to $1583. These were about $25 more than similar Ford models. Production totalled 4573 for calendar 1946. That was not a large number, but all car-makers failed to reach desired production levels due to shifting to a peacetime economy. |

Just spotted what appears to be a 46 Monarch in this video shot in Alberta recently. At the 10:43 mark. https://youtu.be/7YEEjEaWmSE

Not much left on this Monarch. I think that it has seen its last days. What is that 1953 Ford Customline Four Door on the left with no top, a Four Door Convertible? |

If you look closely at the picture it identifies the dealership as Meteor Mercury Lincoln. And dated 1946! Truly visionary as Meteor was three years away from production! Or did I misinterpret the picture? Bill

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
You are right Bill. And the person who did the caption on that photo was wrong. Like so many others who seem to think Meteor and Mercury go together. True enough a couple of years later the dealerships were Lincoln/Mercury/Meteor. But in 1946-47 Meteor was just a dream in Ford's future. I have just been involved in a long and tedious discussion on a facebook group trying to explain it to some who are convinced Mercury Meteor is a brand. Or a Meteor is a "Canadian Ford" . That just implies that we didn't have Fords here, just Meteors. (We had both) I get a little tired of going over it again and again but the question keeps coming up.

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
I just learned that the Canadian Mercury 114 came in two trim levels. The "deluxe" trim model was known as a Mercury 114X - as shown on this Glove Box lid on a 1948 Mercury 114X Sedan. This was similar to the regular Fords that were also built on the 114 inch Wheelbase. In the Ford series, the base model was the Ford Deluxe and the upmarket model was the Ford Super Deluxe. Meanwhile, the "full size" Mercurys built on the 118 inch Wheelbase only came in one trim level. You learn something new every day. In the 1946 Canadian Sales Brochure for the Mercury 114, there is no mention of two trim levels? |

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
So if there are 4 more inches in the wheelbase of the US vs 47 Merc there must be differences in other sheet metal besides the very minor grille differences shown in the picture. Was it in the body and not the front end sheet metal? I never knew that there was a 118" wheelbase late 40s Merc. Only Merc I ever owned was a 53. Not surprising there were differences in trim.

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
The 1946 -1948 Ford and Mercury shared the same body. The extra length was ahead of the Firewall. If you look at the above picture, you will see that the Ford front Fender is one piece while the Mercury has a separate panel under the headlight - see crease. The Hoods are also longer on the regular 118" Mercury. Both model Mercurys (114 and 118) were sold in Canada. Regarding that extra 4" in the Wheelbase, that really made a difference in Right Hand Drive models. Back in the 60's, the family car was a 1947 Ford Super Deluxe Sedan, while my car was a 1946 Mercury (118") Town Sedan. I remember that I had Starter Motor problems and it took all of 5 minutes to remove the Starter Motor, that was close to the RHD Steering Box. My Dad had similar problems in his 1947 Ford, and what a drama it was to remove the Starter Motor. Firstly, he had to undo the front engine Mount, so that the Motor could be slightly tilted, then he undid the Steering Column at the Dash, so that it could be lowered slightly. It was an absolute nightmare on the short 114" Wheelbase Ford, while it was clear sailing on my 118" Mercury. |

Mercury from a car show in B.C. Canada in the early 2000s. Is it one of the 114 models?

Re: Canadian 1946-1948 Mercury 114
As I understand it, and I'm quite confident on this, since Canada is quite a large country with a smallish population dealerships were kind of one to a town. So the Lincoln/Mercury dealership needed a lower price car and therefore the Meteor was born. Now in another town down th Ford dealership needed something more upscale and therefore the monarch was born. So RalpghG had is basically correct except for the geographic aspect defining the distance between dealerships.

Thats true. In the fifties you would not find both Lincoln Mercury dealerships and Ford Monarch dealerships in the same small town in Sask. GM and Chrysler dealerships , yes. Really amazing to recall the number of vehicle/machinery dealers we had in little towns of 500 or less population.

There is something about the Monarchs that boggle my mind---the mix of Ford and Merc parts looks so odd to my untrained eyes. I wonder what the reasoning behind creating another brand was in the first place.

In the Monarch Meteor book by Zavitz. He mentions the Super Deluxe model Mercury was labelled 114X.
