Default Am I the only one??

I am not very good at being a mechanic. If I have a major problem I have to out source it to have it fixed. But... I love reading all the post & the community that comes together to help out. My favorite reads are when the author of a post comes back after taking someones advice & the problem is fixed. I wish I had the skills a lot of you have. That's all.... Marco.

it does not take much "skill" to turn a wrench. But it takes a lot of "knowledge" for that application of skill to have a good outcome. This site is a remarkable open source of great knowledge about our early Fords. If the Search function does not turn up the information you need, the participants will be here with the best advice they can come up with. Just ask. Maybe don't ask what is the best oil to use!

Marko, you're not the only one, and as drolston says above, there are a "hundred" or us or so here on the Barn with varying levels of skills.....and maybe as important.....interest in learning!!

And, in addition to not asking about the best oil, you might not want to ask who puts MMO on their scrambled eggs!!....or anywhere else!!

Having talked with some students at the comm. colleges about futures. Many want to open shops, but do not comprehend the business plan of 'Old Vehicles Only'. In Oregon DEQ and cat converters start with '75 and newer. So why not start a garage called
'Exempt Motors', and work on '74 and earlier vehicles. So much simpler and we all need that service. Many students can't comprehend this business plan. Newc

This is what knowledge and skill is all about.

A fellow’s car quit about two miles from town, and he asked a passerby to have a tow truck sent out from the local garage. The tow truck driver showed up, and asked what the problem was. The fellow said “I was driving along and it just quit.” “Don’t know why, I have lots of gas.” The tow truck driver lifted the hood, looked around, pulled a screwdriver out of his pocket, tapped the side of the carburetor and said, “Try it now.”
The engine started right up and idled nicely. “How much do I owe you.”, the fellow asked? “Well, $125.00 will do it.”, was the reply. “How can you justify $125.00 when we are only two miles from town!” The tow truck driver smiled and replied. “It’s like this, it’s $25.00 for coming out here, and $100.00 for knowing where to tap the carburetor”.

We are all granted certain "gifts" from God at birth, each of us a different set from those of our neighbors. During childhood years, I discovered I had an aptitude for mechanics, and later came to realize I had a keen eye for detail to go with it. So, even though I may have a natural advantage over some, that does not mean that others who do not possess my "gifts" can't achieve similar outcomes as I.
Anyone who can read can learn. It helps to build upon your experience and as you do, you gain more self confidence. It helps to have a vast interest in what you are working on and a drive and persistence to bring your project to completion.
I dare say, none of us knows everything. We all learn more every day we live. Keep up the good work and thank the Lord for the "gifts" He has given!

hey Marco your not the only one im what the Americans call a master mechanic and at 60+ years been at this since i was apprenticed at 15 years over my time I've probably learnt 10% of what there is to know and forgotten 90% of that. I also read these posts as there a great way to learn more and help fill in the gaps in what I've managed to retain.
The hardest lesson any apprentice has to learn is how much they DONT know and when they do they then have a hope of becoming a tradie

You're not the only one, Marko. I'm in the same boat as you. I've had my grandfather's car for 50 years now and people I've never met on this barn have helped me in so many ways. I'm grateful. Tom

I was "gifted" the mechanic thing from birth too. To be honest I wish I was gifted a big Schwantz instead. You can always learn to be a mechanic. Unfortunately not much you can do about the other thing, except maybe some risky expensive surgery. There's a lot more money in film then in wrenching anyway. OP shouldn't sweat it.

Where are you? Any local clubs you belong to? I'm sure someone would love you to help with some of their projects. You'll learn as you go along. Most of us have learned by watching others and breaking stuff.

Helping people with their old cars, is the only way to keep them for the future generations to know about them. Plus it feels good.
