There are some recessed holes to attach the wood to the frame using heavy bolts. Actually there is supposed to be webbing between the wood and the frame. The webbing is supposed to eliminate squeaks. After the wood is bolted to the frame, the bed is set on the wood and 4 bolts on the outside are used to attach the bed to the wood and/or the frame. There are 2 bolts (one on each side) used to attach the bed via the Z bracket to the front of the frame. I am attach a couple picture that show the mock-up I did showing the bed sills fastened to the frame. The Z brackets are supposed to be riveted to the front of the bed, but I hadn't riveted the Z brackets to the bed yet when I took the pictures.

All the vendors carry them, Bert's, Bratton's, etc. The repros are about $25 each. They are made very close to the originals. I am attaching a picture showing an original bracket riveted to the bed.

I don't believe you can bolt the wood to the frame, and then the bed on top.I think there's a couple of bolts that go through the bed,and bolt to the wood, with the nuts recessed up into the wood.At least two of them are over the joint of the rear crossmember/frame.I'm thinking I found this out in the 70's on my own truck,by doing just what you are doing. If you hold the new bed sill up in place,it will be clear. That skived out spot in the sill is to clear the joint and rivets where the rear crossmember mounts.

Info like this has never been published in any of the Model A repair manuals and there has never been a good book printed on restoring CC Pick-uo trucks. Perhaps someone would be interested in that endeavor ?

Good idea on a CC pickup restoration book. Today, here in the Pacific Northwest, the model A Ford CC pickup is the most often restored Model A Ford body style. I would guess it is because we had a lot of Model A pickups to start with? I think that the number of restored model A pickups here in the Northwest probably exceeds the present number the usually the more common model A Tudor sedans here in the Northwest.

Because I've only owned my 30/31 truck for just over a year and I want to enjoy driving it first I may be the one that will actually do a book on complete breakdown and repair and restoration with line by line instructions and clear photographs..THAT'S PIC'S to the young folks..

It's just not right! How can one person be lucky enough to look like that and have the gift to sing like that. Did anybody hear a peep from the audience?

Yep, Sissel has to be Norway's National Treasure.

With a voice like that I'm surprised I never heard of her until just 6 weeks ago when one of our Model A club members forwarded Sissel singing Auld Lang Syne. What an incredible voice. I need to record several of her songs off You Tube to have some traveling music.

Here's a link to another of her great songs.

Great idea! I've just installed a shelf above the windscreen in my 30 CCPU. I plan on putting the CB there but before I do that, I've put a radio in - not thatthe radio is any good. Distances are too great to get reception in most of the outback but it is able to play from a memory stick or via bluetooth from either the phone or ipad.
How did we get here from talking about mounting a P/U box??

I think that the easier way would be to install the wood (sills) on the bed rails and snug them into position. Once that is done, the bed, with the sills attached, can be placed on the rear of the chassis. Make sure that you support the rear of the bed while the bolts are being installed. If you do not support the bed it could fall and be damaged or hurt someone. The holes with the one inch counterbore in the sills take a bolt that is ,437 x 2 inches.

The book that does not exist is "Restoring the Model A Pickup" by Mack Hils, Moberly Missouri 1982 Revised. They made all of the Bed parts and the book has very good diagrams showing the wood sill mounted on the bed before installation onto the chassis. This book certainly helped me in the 80's when I put together a similar basket case.

Bolt the wood rails to the bed before install of the bed. Also, no webbing on the frame beyond the end of the splash shields. Before bed install, you can hold the wood up to the bed and determine which bolts can be installed before bed mounting to the frame. Certain ones, I can't recall which, can be installed and don't have to be removed prior to setting the bed down.

I agree with Russ that the book doesn't offer much useful information. I bought it used for $10, and was glad I didn't pay full price.

I thought I had one, It turns out to be an original 1960s version of the "Model A Album."

Have done my last Model A. Not used any more.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, where have I heard that before? there are a lot of pictures of the components of the bed. That is a good start when working with a basket case with missing pieces. Granted, the text is limited, that is where answers here can fill in the gaps with at least diagrams to help with visualization to keep discussion on track while trying to help others. Wouldn't we all like to have better body parts diagrams with useable descriptive names? Some help is better than none.

If you are looking for pictures, most of them poor quality, with no narrative or descriptions, then this may assist you. If you are looking for a step-by step book with good descriptions and instructions (like Les' books) then DO NOT buy this book.

I bought the book for my father because the description indicated it was a "must have"
After flipping through the book from cover to cover in about 5 minutes, my father said "Is this the whole book?"

Just my two cents. Ed Williamson
