throw out bearing
new to Model A but willing to learn, got a issue with clutch /pressure plate and throwout bearing. i never had the experience of disassembly only the pleasure of reassembly, anyway the flywheel is mounted and clutch disc sandwiched between flywheel and pressure plate , aligned with tool ,all good. throw out bearing return spring replaced and new clutch disc. Gear box installed . Heres my problem . when depressing clutch peddle , bearing easily slides forward but doesn't come near fingers on plate and only with peddle completely depressed to its full travel does it just barely touch fingers. what is missing ?

Re: throw out bearing
Have you adjusted the free play in the pedal?

Re: throw out bearing
Have you adjusted the linkage from the pedal to the throw out bearing shaft? There is a threaded rod that goes between the two and adjusts the amount of travel.

Re: throw out bearing
Could it be you have a throw out bearing carrier from an AA truck?
They are quite a bit shorter... Can you post a picture? Here is a picture Bob C posted some time ago on a different thread...

Re: throw out bearing
It's possible you have the disc in backward, if so it will compress the pressure plate moving the release arms inward.

Re: throw out bearing
The 6 fingers should be 11/16" in from the surface of the pressure plate. A simple tool to make is a 5" piece of aluminum channel with a 1/4" bolt and nuts in the center, so you can lay the channel across the face and slip a feeler gauge between each arm and the bolt head to make sure it's 11/16". It can be plus or minus 1/16" from the 11/16", but make sure all 6 fingers are exactly even.

Re: throw out bearing
Agree with Tom. Adjust the PP fingers. It is easy enough with the engine out. Lots of threads on this.

Re: throw out bearing
thanks Tom , trying to get back at car to take a picture, but while looking into inspection cover shouldn't T O bearing be near fingers? mine appears to slide forward 3 or 4 inches before coming in contact with fingers , the bearing body is long style.

Re: throw out bearing
Yes, when the tranny is mounted in the car and the linkage connected, the throwout bearing will be very close to the 6 fingers. Until the linkage is connected the return spring will pull it back as far as it can move.

Re: throw out bearing
This is how my external linkage looks with approximately 1" of free travel in the pedal..

Re: throw out bearing
My guess is you have a sheared pin on either the fork that moves the throwout bearing or the leaver that is moved by the pedal. Grab both and see if one or the other moves on the shaft.

Re: throw out bearing
guys i gotta say thank you, situation remedied, as suggested fingers on pressure plate off by a mile, i am using original p.plate, problem was i purchased a aftermarket clutch disc , it may be ok but way to thick , noticed while taking off p.plate that fingers came out and while reattaching the fingers were drawn in. gotta say a special thanks to Tom and his simple but effective adjustment tool and his words of wisdom. thanks again
