Default 34 Ford coupe barn find

I have a thread about this coupe on the Hamb, but thought one should go on here as well because this car is close to stock. Last summer I was fortunate enough to come across a 34 Ford three window coupe stored in a barn. Dennis bought the coupe in 1974 and never got around to building it. He took it from place to place as he moved while raising a family - and had it for 38 years by the time I was able to acquire it. Dennis also has a Model A truck in the same barn, and has had the A longer than he had this coupe - he wants to build the truck so was willing to let the three window go. Others had looked at the coupe before me but never met his price, and I could tell it was set high to discourage potential buyers. But I stuck out my hand and agreed to his price without any haggling - Dennis seemed quite shocked as he came to the realization that the old coupe was going to a new owner after all these years. After all, Dennis was 27 when he bought the coupe, and 65 when he sold it to me! A big part of his life for sure. Here are a couple of pics of the coupe coming out of the barn last July.

The coupe is a basically stock body on a 34 frame - the only mods to the body were to the firewall, the front part of the floor, and 48 Chev taillights. All the original wood and glass are in the car, and the wood is in remarkably good condition.

The coupe was quite complete, only missing a motor. Dennis had all the other parts stored in a garage, and they all came with it.

When I got the coupe home, I took it apart and began to clean everything up.
I have been collecting 33-34 Ford cars and parts for 25 years, and have owned four coupes. This is easily the best of the lot. Here are some more pics.....

Someone put a 46-48 Ford rearend in it with a spring from the same year. Did not fit in the rear crossmember, they hung it with longer ubolts - gives it that high appearance at the rear. I changed the rear over to a 40, and used the 46-48 rear spring but shaved a bit off it in the middle to get a fit into the stock rear crossmember. This is just to assemble the coupe as a roller, it will not be the finished product.

Used some gun cleaner to get the primer off. Underneath was this blue paint. The fenders and hood are a brown, so I suspect they did not come with the coupe originally.

Added the fenders, hood, running boards and grille and a few other parts, and put some old whitewalls on 40 Ford 16 inch rims...this is what it looks like today. Just wanted to piece it together for now, have some other projects that are ahead in the lineup. Hope you enjoy the pics!

That is an interesting F100 steering gear installation, may be why the WB are split.

I like the way you work. I am sure this will be a fine car when you finish with it. I am getting ready to start another project myself.I am going to repaint my 39 two door sdn. It a super nice original car with 20,000 miles on it. Today I am going to start taking it apart.Wish it was a four door sdn.
