Default Head gasket again

I wanted to buy a "BEST" brand head gasket but it seems that none of the big Model A part houses sell the "BEST" brand. "BEST doesn't sell retail so if it's so good, why isn't it avaible through the normal channels?

Ask the manufacturer who retails their product! Wayne

HI Divco1,
I have just bought BEST G509 from Arizona Model A and G573 from Steve Becker at Berts. 509 is for A head up to 4 inch bore and 573 is similar but with 2 small steam hole for B engines. It also fits A's and both work well with Snyders higher compression heads.
Just ask for them by BEST part number as I don't think they are listed as BEST in the catalogues but I think Steves one is A 6051 B composition gasket..
These numbers are from memory as I don't have the gaskets or receipts with me at present.

The last "Best" head gasket I purchased was a B style from Snyders

For Thomas Head from Snyders part number is B-6051-C it has 573 stamped on it, I had tried copper first, spoke to them and they recommended this one as it was thinner and would not require many re-torques. Note I had leak up head bolt between 1 and 2 when I pulled head there was nothing wrong with copper gasket. 250 miles on new rebuild. Diamond block.

Antique Engines in Skokie recommends Best 573 for their hi compression head engines which is available at ANTIQUE FORD on Long Island. 631 256 0030.

I buy my head gaskets from Brattons, spray them with Copper Coat, put a 2" piece of copper wire in the Copper Coat between #3 AND #4 for renforcement, and reinstall the head. Torque to 50#, run to operating temp and torque to 55#

I ordered the "best" gasket from Sandy Olson. My original question was why don't the big 3 or 4 model A suppliers sell the gasket that a lot of people recommend. Snyders sell the 573 but not the 509. Best doesn't recommend the 573 with a stock head.

We would only be guessing. My guess is to get a discount they must order a minimum amount and the requests for the part is actually low compared to what they would need to spend to stock it.

Best bet is to ask them to get the true answer.

they prolly have a mountain of FelPros on the shelf they need to move. The FelPros only fit the stock head well; they fit the HC heads very poorly

I trust the head manufacturer. The Brumfeld HC head calls out a R3 Felpro.

only the R4 avail now as far as i know

never had a Brumfield in my hand to examine the fit in the valve area. That is where some gaskets do not match up well
