Aluminum timing gear V8 60
Did Ford ever use these in production, or were they a replacement part? Ray

Re: Aluminum timing gear V8 60
For a v8/60 I have never seen aluminum timing gears period , however I do know there were a few made by some one for race engines & also steel cam gears for racing.
I would love to find some Aluminum cam gears for a v8/60 . Cheers Tony |

Re: Aluminum timing gear V8 60
Are the gears in a 60 a different size than 85 and up engines? I haven't built a 60 for so long I cain't remember what the gears look like. Walt

Re: Aluminum timing gear V8 60
Tony, here are pics of some aluminum timing gears from my stash. Early 85hp on left, 60hp on right. First is of front, second is of back. This 60hp timing gear carries part number 2709-A, nothing on this gear that mentions Offenhouser, but that doesn't necessarly mean they didn't make it. The aluminum 60hp timing gear was part of a collection of 60hp engines and engine rebuilding parts that I bought from a family in NJ. These parts had belonged to someone who had raced a hydroplane on the Delaware River. I called Rich Willim about finding these parts and had several conversations with him about how to build a 60hp engine that would produce 100+ hp.

Re: Aluminum timing gear V8 60
Is the Aluminum used in a timing gear have any special alloy for ware
And at this day & age with 3D Printers & CNC Machines wouldn't it be very possible to Get them made ? I know $$$$ but it might be worth while to look into it. Or find a retired Machinist to make you what you need ~ Just a thought ~ |

Re: Aluminum timing gear V8 60
I think they would be difficult to make. The ones that I have the hub is steel and the rest is aluminum. Mine are identical to JM 35 SEDAN. The ones that I have are NOS. One has a Ford tag on it that reads 52-2709-A, the other two are NIB with V8 FORD stamped on left side of box tab and 2709A on the right side of tab with the letters written between in ink pen cursive Alum. Boxes are plain other than that. No Ford logo, no Offenhauser. They do appear to be factory made and all are identical. I'll let you be the judge. Ray

Back to original question, did any of these come off the assembly line, or were they replacements only? Thanks for info . Ray

Re: Aluminum timing gear V8 60
Aluminum Cam gears were aftermarket only.
The OEM Fiber Gears would wear out quickly or break under the. "RACE CAM" spring pressures when turning them 7000rpm. Was a guy in California remaking them but he passed away. He had not made any in 10yrs. Have 2 guys racing each other now to get some back on the market. I have a STEEL cam gear that someone made at sometime. There were ALUMINUM Oil Pump Service Gears made by Ford. The N series Ford Tractor uses the same INTERNAL pump gears and shaft bushing as a 60hp. But a 60 has a 22t oil pump gear and a Tractor has a 19t gear. |

Re: Aluminum timing gear V8 60
Bought one today at the Stowe, VT car show & swap meet. Looks identical to the fiber one. No markings, looks like it was cast, them machined.

Re: Aluminum timing gear V8 60
Dan MacEachern can make alum. gears for that. You do not need the steel hub.
He can do spur type also. |
