Default 39 coupe interior

Hi Folks

I’m getting ready to replace the front rubber mat. Under old mat the current insulation looks like (best I can describe) horse hair. What’s the best way to remove it? It may be glued down. I would like to install better insulation,

Or do I just go over the top of this old insulation?

Also any trick / shortcuts installing new mat?

Andy, the new Benton Gray mat will come with a modern type backing. It is fine to use if you desire.
To remove the old mat, you'll need to do (obviously) what's necessary. It wasn't originally glued and hopefully (my guess) it isn't now. rather, it's just "stuck" in places from being there so long.
Usually it can be removed fairly easily - no scraping required, just "rolling" with your fingers.

Mike thanks. Just to be sure we’re on same page. The horse hair insulation (under tha mat) is what I was referring to that appears glued down.

Yep, same page. Like I'd mentioned previously, it was not originally glued down. I'm guessing it's just stuck due to age.

If I'm reading you both right, sounds to me that the mat and insulation were put down separately on an original 39. When i took old mats out of front and back of my 36 sedan, they were one unit(insulation attached to mat). But, I'm not sure i was taking out the original mats, although i thought so at the time.

Terry, Most '39's didn't have an insulator as the original poster referred to.
In fact the 39's had a heavy tar paper identical to the stuff in the roof of the car and between the inner and outer sheet metal of the trunk lid. The so called 'waffle weave" paper.
I've attached a photo of a pair of authentic pieces I'd removed from a coupe.
I suspect the mat and "horse hair" insulation in the OP's first post is a replacement.

Kube, is there a source for the waffle weave paper or a modern replacement?

Drake sells the paper in rolls. Enough to make the pair. You need the thicker of the two he sells.
