Default 34 ford transmission mount

I have rebuilt the 37 engine in my 34 fordor, new mounts all round, but have a harshness / vibration through the the body and frame. Pulled the engine, rechecked everything and completely balanced the rotating assembly. Many hours and dollars later the result, an improvement but still not smooth. After several sleepless nights and phone calls, I removed the trans mount bolts and lifted the transmission just off the frame, instant success. I removed the mount and compared it with an old original one, the rubber ? is real hard. ( Chinese rubbish ?) ordered another from a different supplier, same problem. Any one else had trouble with these ? Where can I purchase a good quality mount, soft , live rubber as Henry made them ?

I'm not so sure that you want the rubber in that mount to be real soft. Also not so sure that lifting the mount off the frame means the problem is definitely in the rear mount. You could be just isolating the vibration away from the frame making you think the mount is the problem. JMO

Sounds like you have metal to metal contact in or on your rear mount . Are you running 37 type waterpumps ? If yes do you have spacers to get the motor sitting right ? Just guessing here as I have never had this problem . Even the slightest metal to metal contact in the mount will be REAL NOTICEABLE & datz NOT a guess .

There could be vibration coming from the driveshaft or other rotating components. Engine steady rods also need to be adjusted for tension.

Most of the engine front or rear mounts get soft because of age and exposure to old lubricant and the elements. New ones were suposed to be firm in order to cancel vibration without moving around too much. The steady rods control the forward movement under load.

33/34 at times had some vibration issues in the drive shaft one of Fords fixes was to pump a tube or 2 of grease in the U joint ,

I have spent hrs and hrs on my 33 to get it smooth,
When I say hours I mean hundreds
Here is what finally worked
Balance all parts in the eng, flywheel etc
New gearbox bearings
new old stock u/joint,
new dick spadaro driveshaft.
new engine mounts.
balance the u/joint assy.(made a mandrel for the machine shop)
balance the d/shaft
fit all new bearings to the rear end.
fit 46 ring and pinion 3.78
fit new tyres and balance wheels
fit new front wheel bearings
select fit the front driveshaft bearings and sleave(NOS) to give .004 up and down play
I had done lots of the above previously, but feel the thing that made the difference was the driveshaft and the front bearing .

Thanks for the suggestions and thoughts. Engine mounted correct with u shaped adaptors on front. Tried running without stabilizer bars, this gave a very slight improvement. Harshness / vibration is there when stationary and revving engine around 2500rpm + and on road as engine revs increase. Have checked out several old trans mounts 33-34 and 35-36 , even in the center well away from oil grease etc ,all appear to made with a soft rubber compound. Away on vacation for 2 weeks so this project will be on hold for a little while.

Couple things on the stationary test to ponder , If you had the car in gear with the clutch depressed you eliminated the clutch disc & tranny from the cause as they are stationary . Throwout bearing is loaded . If you had the car in neutral with the clutch engaged you were also spinning the clutch disc & most of the tranny gears . Throwout bearing is unloaded & the tranny mainshaft is still stationary . Did you happen to change the flywheel or pressure plate ? Looks to me like your problem isn't in the driveline . -------------------------------------------
Harshness / vibration is there when stationary and revving engine around 2500rpm + and on road as engine revs increase.
34,
If things shake out and you are sure the problem is the rear
mount I have some real nice script '33 - '34 rear mounts...they are used
but in great shape.

PS
To me it sounds like you have bind in the drive train.
Remove the carb and lay a level on the carb face on
the intake....technically speaking the rear of the motor
should be a tad lower than the front....just a tad.

Any thing that rotates can get out of balance including fans and water pumps. All you have to do there is run it without the belt to check. Some of these old Fords may have had some parts machined off square too. Alignment can be checked but it takes a lot of fussing with the stuff while it's appart. FoMoCo machine operators did make some mistakes in this respect just like any other manufacturer but luckily not too many.
