1940 ford column shift repair bushing
Looking to see if anyone has a hardware store suggestion for replacing the bushing in the lower support bracket for 1940 to 48 cars ( in this case its a 1941 ford pickup)
It keeps the bracket from rubbing the shifter shaft. Appears to be either leather or fiber. I found one online says its made of felt. Not sure how a rubber O ring would work, if that would drag or bind or if it would make any difference with the leverage from the length of the shifter handle. |

Re: 1940 ford column shift repair bushing
Been looking at the same well worn bushing material as well as the rubber lined gromets for the shift arms. Many of the bushings are worn to the ID of the bracket leaving only the remains of the bushing in the groove. It's reasonable to expect that some felt ring, well oiled could work. I may try making my own using arch punches of two sizes. Another try may be a lubricated polyester sash cord laid into the groove, held in place by the shift tube. Good Luck Skid! Fred A

Cut one out of an old leather belt or buy a Neoprene O ring.

Ended up machining one out of nylon and slit it with a razor blade to install it. Then fitted the bore to a snug fit. |
