Tore down a 1951 Ford flathead v8. When crank was cleaned and checked, this was found. Found no metal in oil pan to speak of. Certainly, nothing of this size. Any ideas?? Cast defect?? Can crank work properly with this “defect”?? 9BF491A0-D27A-47B4-92DF-6171C375C268.jpg

Crankshafts were cast in groups, that is where it was broke off the the cluster

Looks normal to me. They were cast in groups of 4 and then broken apart, which leave the mark you are seeing.

Thanks for the great info. I was sure that you would have a great answer. I was concerned that it might affect the balance of the crankshaft.

Not a problem, but an old crank should be magged, just to eliminate a surprise.

It was balanced by Ford after that so not an issue.
