Default corn head grease

I went to the local farm store looking for John Deere Corn Head grease. They didn't know what I was talking about. (they sell another brand of tractor, but you'd think they would know). Anyway, what other grease works? Or what spec? I'm guessing the main brand they sell and service there would use something similar.

AGCO dealers have the same grease under their brand name.

Thanks for the help. I'll see what I come up with at the red tractor store. (3 miles away. John Deere store is more like 20 miles!)

You can order it on line, but you may have to buy more than one tube. I use JDCHG in my 35 steering box and U joint housing with excellent results. I'm not sure I would trust the brand x grease to work as well.

I got it at the local JD dealer, took almost the full tube for my 37 Hudson box in my 32 PU.

You have a Hudson steering box in a Ford? Boy the Hudson guys would get a kick outa that! Being a Hudson nut myself.. I would love to have more details. PM me. By the way, I bought a box of the corn stuff. makes rear wheel bearings get quiet! (At least on Hudsons).

I believe that track and roller grease is the same stuff.

The right Hudson box (1937) fits relatively well into a 32 thru 34 Ford with a few mods and its a Gemmer design if I'm not mistaken. The 32 Ford guys were all looking for them back in the day. Now days the Hudson and LaSalle parts are a lot harder to find for the old traditional hot rods.

JD Corn Head gearbox grease is a thixotropic type with the NLGI 0 rating. It has a polyurea thickener. There are others out there that are similar but you have to look pretty close to get the right combination to work as well.

This video talks about the thixotropic properties.

If you do go to the JD dealer call first, my local JD dealer doesn't always have it in stock.

If the JD dealer sells just lawn and garden stuff, then chances are they won't have it. I had to go to the dealer that sold the big agricultural equipment.

Phone the J.D. Dealer to see if in stock then drive the 20 miles to get the real stuff not something that 'might ' be the same. You will be glad you did.

While your at the JD dealer, buy the grease gun that takes their tubes, cheap and better than trying to get the JD grease out of their tubes and into one that has the standard size .

John Deere grease tubes are standard size. Same as the grease tubes I buy at the local Co-op. Anytime I've needed corn head grease I've found it on the shelf at the JD ag dealer.

Some older grease guns were set up by the manufacturers to have the grease pumped in from a pail or other bulk grease dispenser or be filled by hand. The plunger is larger in diameter on these. You have to check and see if it is made to take standard replaceable grease cartidges. Most of them are now set up to work either way with a more expandable plunger seal. Most folk use cartridges now days.

Buy it online! Local dealer does not stock it or even knew what I was talking about.
