adjustable lifters

HI guys, I had a question if anyone knew of a quality set of adjustable
lifters for an 8ba that were USA made. I talked with Walt and he suggested
to ask here on the forum.

for what you pay for a good set of adjustable you can have the valves ground the right way, and then you wont have to adjust them like you probably will every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, one will always come lose

To try and answer your question I have had good luck with the nos Johnson lifters on the blower motors I have built. I have a few out there with 25 to 30 thousand miles on them.They are in hot rods that are driven quite a bit. The Isky lifters are a little heavier than the hollow lifter but the Isky lifter works well in a mild street engine.

Finding someone that can do it the old fashion way, might be your biggest problem. Abd Walt isn't getting any younger.

Its not that difficult to do it if you have a grinder with the stem attachment.

But its damn timeconsuming and with todays rates it cost money...

So having a machineshop do it wil put a hole in the pocket and most machineshops dont work on an engine still in the car...

I suggest you watch "Fiatnuzt" on U tube. He is engine rebuilder in Calf. He came up
with a jig with a dial ind. for grinding the stems. Its slick and I'll bet it was done
this way in the first place. Pretty easy to make although he sells them too.

If you are running a reground cam stock lifters will be too short.

I am running a Howard M-6 grind cam and got my adjustable lifters from Red's Headers www.reds-headers.com and have not had any problems with them.

But you can weld some extra length on um, and grind the stems for length.

Hi Tony, just a tip, but these lifters offered at Joblot are "off-shore" pieces, read that as most likely "Chinese".

This goes for both their "hollow" style and their "conventionals"?

P.S. I've put this following info up here some years now, we haven't had one single issue with the original solid lifters from what is now known as "Hylift-Johnson". We've sold hundreds upon hundreds for years now and not one single complaint! If you are using a "smaller-base" cam simply use some SBC lash caps, this will "sink" the adjusters by an add'l .060". These are the very same lifters offered by Comp Cams for the Flatheads!

NEVER weld on the lifter.
Weld up the valve stem.

Hi Pete, but isky did it back then on the radius lifters?

No, Isky did not weld on the radius tappets. However, they did silver braze. Much different than "welding" as would be done on a valve stem.

But i welded hardend material to 8ba lifters and run it with a potvin 425 .....
Works good! :-)

Getting back to the old fashion way of doing it. I know the problems and machinery needed to do the job right. Some old valve grinders have attachments for grinding the stem for size. However if you don't do this on a regular basis, it takes for ever to do, and you always find a few to do over. With all that said, I plan on doinf just that on my next racing engine, which will have to run at hi RPMs for long periods of time. So if you want it done right find a professional to do it.

Is there a specific type of filler material you should use on the valve?

I just picked up a valve grinder that has the attachment to do the stem. I'm considering this on a future engine build for dirt track racing.

I tig weld 347 stainless on valve stems.
It is a low carbide precipitation rod.
