1949 Merc. Water Pumps
Is their any advantage or disadvantage to running 49 Wide belt water Pumps. Looks to me like the pulleys are in a different spot??. I have a couple of different styles and was going to send a pair off for rebuilding. thanks up front for any advice that I can get... David

Re: 1949 Merc. Water Pumps
Running them on what? I believe the wide belt Mercury pumps are the least used of any on the 8BA series (they are not reproduced). They would only be practical on a concourse correct restoration.

Re: 1949 Merc. Water Pumps
Is it a car or truck? I think they are different in the way the motor mounts. Truck would be the flat mount and wide belt, I can only speak about the truck, I haven't played with with a car flattie....yet. I think the car mounts are angled??
cheers This is in a '49 F-47

Re: 1949 Merc. Water Pumps
I'm using the later Merc narrow belt pumps on the 8ba in my '39 p/u but at one point had a '49 with the wide belts. The later pumps use a u shaped spacer between the rubber motor mount and the water pump mounting flange. The '49 wide belt pumps used a more square looking spacer IIRC. Mac Van Pelt will known the exact details as the issue of Merc pumps has been discussed in the past.

Some info on this thread. Post number 15 shows photos of the spacers used on both the wide and narrow belt pumps.

Re: 1949 Merc. Water Pumps
Pulleys are the same location as 8RT pumps, but as noted, mounts are different.

Re: 1949 Merc. Water Pumps
For any non original application you'd be better off using truck water pumps. As noted, they would allow you to use the original style biscuit mount for a cleaner install. Also, replacement pumps down the line are much easier to acquire.

Re: 1949 Merc. Water Pumps
That depends on where a fabricator wants the motor to set. Truck pumps are the norm but if you want the engine lower then the frame mounts have to be altered. My point is that Merc pumps can be adapted for those situations as well. I rebuild my own pumps so folks not using them leaves more for me to rebuild. It's good for folks to know what else might be available in the early ford parts world when fabricating non stock set ups. I like the Merc fan set up better than the truck for tight spaces but sometimes that's not enough.
