Dip stick
AllAt the recent car show at Orchard Beach, The Bronx NY, 3 model A 's were there and nobody was able to answer .....what is the proper depth that the oil dip stick is to go in. None of ours had a stop on it and I have been putting mine in all the way to the neck.
Please advise on the proper depth. With 5 quarts and the stick all the way in , I get a full reading on the stick. |

Re: Dip stick
I was taught that the dipstick goes all the way in, as far as it can go.

Re: Dip stick
Dimensions from the full line to the handle bottom were given in the past and I measured mine to also give an answer, but don't recall the exact dimension right now. A "SEARCH" might turn up the thread with the answer.

Re: Dip stick
All the way in. And don't forget to fit the "other" end (the short stub below the loop) into the block, as well, to ensure a true reading.

Re: Dip stick
[QUOTE) The reprint 1930 Owner's manual I have says to be sure both prongs of the dip stick are fully inserted, as far as it will go, so I would say just stick it in until it won't go any further.[/QUOTE]
That's what she said also, Sorry I just could not Refrain. |

Re: Dip stick
All the way in is a good idea with most things in life including dip sticks. However, over the years you never what has happened. Are you sure you have a correct dipstick ? If not, then after an oil change [ 4 qts] just file a mark on the stick. If the pan is ever removed for cleaning and 5 qts installed then check the mark and correct it if needed.

Re: Dip stick
I have found in the past, discrepancy's in the markings from a repo dip stick as compared with original dip sticks. Oil level half way between L & F is just fine.

Re: Dip stick
Where is the discrepancy between 4 and 5 quarts. Why do some books say 5 and others 4 qts ?
