Red face 79 Granada 6 cyl nengine noise

Rebuilt the engine on 79 granada and still had noise like valve lifters for 15 maybe 30 secs when i start it..Took head off installed all new lifters and still there..Dont sound like bearing chatter and has perfect oil pressure. So could it possibly be a little looseness in rocker arm assembly?? Any thoughts and info appreciated..

I've heard from some owners of the Ford 200 or 250 I6 engines that they can get a leak at exhaust gaskets that can seal with heat between the manifolds or leaks at air injector lines. It might even be something to do with the timing chest area. Things sometimes take a bit longer to get oil after start up. It could even be a fuel pump or one of the accessories on the front of the engine.

My exhaust leaks usually take more than 15 - 30 seconds to seal up from the engine heat. I've had both a seal leak and crack at the manifold on my '61 Mercury. Just as a point of reference.

If the valves are adjusted correctly then Sometimes the lifters need time to pump up. Longer than 20-30 seconds. Sometimes a couple of minutes. They should start to quiet
down. It’s a little unnerving but lately with the lifters we are getting it’s happened a lot.
I don’t know who makes them or where, but in the past with Johnson lifters it wasn’t a problem.
The new instructions that are in the new lifters also say not to pre lube them like we used to do.

Good luck

I had both a 200 and 250 in the '70 Mavericks I owned and neither one had exhaust manifold gaskets. Neither had been removed prior to my removing the heads.

Loose spark plugs can cause a similar sound. Just a thought.

I had one 302 that would rattle like crazy when cold on one brand of motor oil, and another brand the motor was quiet all the time, even on very cold start up.
