Not a ton but it will. For whatever reason, I once put the dipstick down in the side pan instead of back in its hole and then drove 20 miles. Didn't lose that much oil, not enough to be dangerous at all. I did lose that dipstick though...

Yes it will. I lost one one time and made one out of a twig and a straw, until I could get another.

I looked at a new owners pu and he had oil on the firewall, steering column, etc, what a mess. I asked him for permission to install the dip stick properly he said yes and thanked me.

Mess, absolutely. Big loss, no. Doesn’t take a lot coming out to make a big mess. It’s like glitter

Yup. You need to fully insert the dipstick into the hole. Some dipsticks are a little sprung. You may need to squeeze the round area together so that both “legs” of the dipstick will go into the hole.

I have found the the repros (from Vintique of course) are a little small in diameter and fit a bit loose. On those I spread the legs a little so it holds tight and put a small 'o' ring on it.

I got a late 28 motor off of craigslist, covered in grease and road dirt, I only bought it because of the price and all the dirt kind of told me that nobody had messed with it in the last 70 years or so. Anyway it didn't have a dip stick and had plugged the hole it's self with oil and road dirt, it is a self healing type of thing if you run them long enough. Other holes were filled in the same manner. I took it apart and found the timing gear was off one tooth so whoever ran it probably wasn't real happy after the last guy worked on it. Still has a good multi disk so I am going to use it for a while in my off road truck.

Well I didn't know.......... so I tried it. My engine spits out oil and makes a mess, so for me the stick stays in the proper hole.

Not a Model T but years ago the crankcase breather in my sons Chevy II got plugged up and crankcase pressure blew the dipstick out along with considerable oil. Quite a mess.

Pump gravity and splash oil system.its like a monsoon in the crankcase, the connecting rod and crankshaft throw passes through a tray of oil each rotation with a little 'cup' or dipper picking up oil to lube the rod bearing, the rest splashes up against the cam and lifters, simple yet effective.
