After the EPA kicked in around the mid 70s with California an exception, the manufacturers found every way they could to make the mandated emissions systems work with out noticeable problems in the range of operation while still using carburetors and the like. They would work OK for a while until things got mucked up inside and no longer operated as they were intended. That period in motor vehicle development is one that I'd rather forget. You don't see too many folks trying to restore cars from the late 20th century. Few of them are worth the trouble.
