Default Basic performance questions

I figured I would ask this on this section instead of the early V8 section. I have a '33 pickup that originally had a Model B engine, which is long gone. I have an opportunity to buy a Model B engine from a '33. I am wondering what kind of performance I could squeeze out of one of these engines? Could I match the HP of an early V8 flathead or better? Or are there any performance places that I should look at to get more familiar with this kind of stuff? I know Red's Headers lists a few parts, and have found a couple other places that I may check. Thanks.

Higher comression head, decent cam, bigger intake valves and a downdraft carburetor makes 80-95 hp acheivable. Many have done such things with good results. Rod

The amount of performance you can get from a B engine is directly proportional to the amount of money applied.
A practical long life street 4 banger will be in the 80 to 100 hp area.
You can most likely get 20 miles to the gallon if you keep your foot light.
Depending on who does the work and parts quality an engine like that can run from 5 to 10 kilobucks.
A flathead V8 will be in that price range also but might get 180 hp.
The V8 will be more pleasant to drive because of less vibration.

JWL's book is a good investment for that V8 info.
He is on the Fordbarn V8 forum

I'll look into it, thanks. I have a '53 engine completely rebuilt and I need to sell it due to the fact that it won't fit without more modification.

Jim Brierely has a book on how to build a performance 4 banger. $20.00. He runs B's, including Bonneville. Contact him at [email protected] There is also a lot of info on this forum for building a hot 4 banger. Also check out Ford A Speed Technology, FAST, at www.hotforhotfours.com/‎

"Speed costs money, how fast do you wanna go?"
I would suggest that if you don't have a weird passion for the 4-banger, don't go with it. You'll end up spending more money for probably less speed then if you'd go with a v8.

That being said, I have a weird passion for and love my 4-banger! Love the sound. I put a hi-comp head on it, made a world of difference. But I'm still not the fasted guy on the block.
