Re: Repainting an engine
I wouldn't. It does well right out of the can.

Re: Repainting an engine
I had the same paint lifting problem on the top deck and just below on my 59A. I had painted it years ago and been quite diligent using Tide to scrub the motor down and then alcohol but it still lifter. I used Dupli-Color engine paint.
I did the lifted areas over a few months back. I scrapped, sanded and scuffed with a red Scotch pad then cleaned with lacquer thinner and finally with alcohol. First time it lifted! so leaned it all off again. I contacted Bill Hirsch but he only sells quarts which I would never used and no 1/4 or 1/2 pints and also couldn't tell me if the Chrysler Red Industrial that I have was the same as his Chrysler Red. I then what I have done many times for touch-up. I sprayed from the can into the cap or plastic cup and brushed it thickly on with a good artist brush. It spreads evenly with no brush strokes. I put a second coat on an hour or so later. the second coat must be kept wet and you need to be careful that the solvent doesn't pull the first coat off. |

Re: Repainting an engine
That quart of paint might have been cheap compared to all the rework.

Re: Repainting an engine
An excellent degreaser before painting is Westlys Bleechwhite.I didn't believe it until I tried it. Cheaper than lacquer thinner and washes off with water.
