X is for exhaust, N is for Intake and the numbers are the cylinder numbers in firing order.

Under the first bracket = when #4 Exhaust and #1 intake are open at the same time. The valves and lifters in the second bracket are still on the heal of their cam lobe and on those cylinders and you can then grind and/or adjust the valves for those cylinders.

That's the procedure listed for setting the valves as in my Motors manual. It's a good way of doing it in vehicle with a minimum of engine turns and only 3 setting positions. You have to accept that the valves are not strictly opposite the lobe, though, which is ok for everyday drivers but racing folk want it all much more exact.
