Default Emergency fuel pump swap…

The fuel pump diaphragm recently failed, leaking gas out of the weep holes. Luckily I was already on my street so I was able pull up in the driveway. I thank my lucky stars for being so close to home!! I thought I was going to need to use my fire extinguisher!!

It got me thinking about having to swap out a fuel pump while on the road! Having to install a new ferrule on the hard fuel line connecting to the rubber inlet hose would be no picnic on the side of the road…(I had to trim the fuel line to cleanly install a new ferrule)….

Always carry extra parts.

I've added an electric backup at the fuel tank and modified the fuel lines under the hood to allow a bypass hose easily installed to eliminate the mechanical pump in case of a failure. No, not stock but would be so much nicer to deal with.

Sure. I'll get some pics in the next couple days and post them.

Check your oil level since much of the leaked fuel most likely went into the engine, you may need an oil change.

The electric backup is at the rear right at the tank and pushes fuel to the mech pump on the engine. It's on a toggle switch.
To bypass the mech pump simply run a rubber line from the steel line coming from the rear and hook it to the inlet of the carb. Switch on the electric pump and you're on your way.

Is it difficult to find an electric pump with 2-1/2 lbs. pressure so as not to "overload" the Stromberg carburetors? I had CharlieNY rebuild mine and he set the pressure correctly. At 78 years old I'm thinking it is a pump for life! LOL

It wasn't difficult...Facet offers one and Amazon sells them as do other places. (Note mine is 12v so that makes it much easier)

I drive my car several times a week so never need to prime the carb but it sure works well to refill the carb after working on it.

My mech pump is also a CharlieNY rebuild so I may not need the backup either!

You do not need to solder the brass ferrule for it to seal on the gas line.
