Re: Flathead engine stand mounting
Ross, thanks for saving those dimensions. I lost my stuff in the computer where I first worked them out so, if I save it again I won't have to work up the numbers, again. This, of course, falsely assumes there will not be another hard drive failure.

Yes, I have @ Hershey. Now that block was a 59AB with Ardun heads on it so it had a lot more weight hanging out front of it then a "standard" motor. |

Re: Flathead engine stand mounting
Blimy, real first hand stuff. Like I said I've never seen it, seen lots of early ones hung off the bell, but not a broke one. I can see the leverage when hung thus, and am quite uncomfortable seeing it done.
The above is good enough for me not to do it, I'll heed the warning. Not that I use an engine stand, I use the floor, they can't fall off the floor. If I made one it would be like some I seen in the service bulletins. Supporting front and back, pivoting on a ring in front so you can fit the cam through the ring. The modern type ( the hang from the bell or off the exhaust ports) always feel wobbles to me. And you have to swap the engine around to port or clean up the exhaust ports. Thanks for the answers. Martin. off to hijack another thread, but hopefully keeping it relevant. |

Re: Flathead engine stand mounting
I have a complete 47 motor hanging from its bell housing but supported at the front by a block of wood between the bottom of the sump and the stand.

Yes all our stands in the shop we have added a front support. Just a simple pipe with a 5/8 threaded rod - take up nut & washer short piece of angle iron welded on top of the threaded rod. If worried about a flathead, just see what happens with a 460 or bad a ass 430 Lincoln. The support is a must. Those stands droop like spegetti.. 2x4 also good enough. And no broken housings because we use a full plate on the block. sam |

Re: Flathead engine stand mounting
Mounting a flathead off the end is like having sex with out protection,
You have those that say I have been doing it that way for all my life with no problems!!! Then on the other side you have those thay say to the judge HONEST I only looked at her with no clothes on. Why do I have to pay Child support??? But in both cases sooner or later you !!! WILL PAY !!! LOL/LOL |

Re: Flathead engine stand mounting
I too was uncomfortable with mounting my '40 engine on its bell housing so I made up a neet adapter that allows mounting on the exhaust pads and gives me access to the entire engine. I will try and post a picture.

Re: Flathead engine stand mounting
To me it's like knowing that jumping off a high cliff, or getting under the tallest tree you can find during a violent thunder storm, fully well knowing that these actions can be hazardous to your health even though some have done these things and lived to tell about it. Why gamble on a reported unsafe practice if there are known safer alternatives??

Sure if you jump up and down on it something may happen, but you where asking for it. I’ve worked on dozens (hung off the “bell”) with no disasters. |

Re: Flathead engine stand mounting
How can it be a myth, if it actually happens? As I stated earlier, I have never seen it, that's why I asked. And folk have answered with actual examples. I'm fully aware that their are many many hung off the bell and have been for years, with no breakedges, but some have broke off. That's good enough for me, not to take that chance.

Re: Flathead engine stand mounting
I made a plate that picks up on the exhaust flange bolts, but it is made to fit one side only and uses all 6 bolts. I was worrying about it when I did use it on the other side and could only put 4 bolts in.
I see that the original Ford (KRW) stands use the exhaust bolts and only 4 of em so I suppose that's the way to go. People have reported problems with hanging off the bell, no-one has reported problems with using 4 exhaust bolts and that is what Ford used, so that's good enough for me. If you hang it off the bell and want to spin it upside down, how can you do that with a wooden prop at the front? It may be all right for one that is just on display, but for building up or tearing down it just won't work, unless the rear mount has a matching front mount that can pivot on exactly the same centres, and then it would have to be a well engineered piece to avoid getting in the way of fitting the cam or other parts. Hanging off the exhausts is just so much easier, and a proven method. Mart. |
