Default Steering box ?

Alright, I know this is going to to be one of those I should already know questions, but when looking at my friends 1929 and my other friends 1930 they have steering gear boxes with a place to put gear oil in, and mine has a grease fitting. What is up? Thanks ahead for your help.

The grease fitting is what Ford used as the plug. My 28 and 29 also has them.

Thanks, Just remove the fitting and fill with 600w. Didn't want to pump grease in it, now I know.

It was somewhat common to pump super thick oil in the steering boxes rather than make a mess trying to pour that oil.
As a kid we used to use a dedicated grease gun and filled it with goop [ technical term for the mixture of grease and oil we made which I still use for the u-joint]

If you use only 600W, it will almost certainly leak.

Being practical, if you have a LEAKY one, GREASE & a little STP works good.

I would definately NOT use grease but if you would use the STP if you need a something heavy. the problem with the grease as once you rotate the moving parts the grease really just pushes out of the way and doesn't flow back to lube things well. The constant flow and immersion of the 600 or stp if you choose will at lease keep things lubes well and also make it steer easier than harder with the grease.
I'm sure there's another take on it right behind me but that is my suggestion. Install one of the screw in tubes from the bottom end to help reduce the leakage.

NLGI #0 (semi-liquid) grease is used by many people for this application. Stops the leaks, but 'levels out' or flows enough to keep everything lubed.

Penrite makes a 1200 semi-fluid lubricant especially for steering boxes. It will not leak out.

Penrite lubricants are available thru Restoration Supply in Escondido California. (800) 306-7008.

I have used it for years.

Finally bought some corn head grease yesterday out in the sticks.

The guy on the counter even knew what it was straight away! Last time I asked fot it I had to show the dealer a picture of it on the net.

No corn in sight either.

Not unless it is in need of overhaul.
