46 & 47 Truck engine dust/splash shields
Some trucks had a 2piece dust/splash shield/pan under the engine bolted to the frame rails. Were they on ALL trucks from the factory? (1/2ton, Tonner & bigger) They are rare today, wondering if ALL came with them & never went back on after working on the truck? Were they the same size/2 pieces on trucks regardless of model?
Thanks... |

Re: 46 & 47 Truck engine dust/splash shields
My 42 1/2 military had a two piece . It did catch a lot of dirt and grease . I'm not exactly sure what the real purpose was. Maybe back in the days of dirt roads they kept the slop down off the engine but as you've seen most are long gone and the truck do just fine. Tim

Re: 46 & 47 Truck engine dust/splash shields
Engine splash pans helped seal up the opening between the frame and the engine to reduce the dust, dirt and splashing from reaching the engine compartment. Virtually all early Ford vehicles had some form of pans. The shape varied a lot as the engine location and frame shape varies for almost every model and year.
All '46-'47 trucks came with a left and right hand pan. Some Ford parts books list them as "Mud Pans". The 1950 Ford parts book lists part number 21T-6775 and 21T-6776 as the left and right engine pans which fit 1942-1947 trucks (not pickups).

Not pickups? My Tonner MH Express has them, doubt they’d have been added later in life. Stu

Plus, parts books only list parts that were available for service needs.

Does everyone think the 2 pieces would be same for 1/2ton, Tonners & bigger models? i have collected what i think are dust pans from swap meets, etc & have some that don't bolt together, have different cut out holes, etc. Were pans for 6 cylinder engines same as V8's? |

Re: 46 & 47 Truck engine dust/splash shields
For each year, almost every model and each engine type have different pans. Some pans fit multiple years. These pans fill the gap between the frame and engine, so any change in the frame or engine requires different pans. The three truck types you mention all have different frames. So, to answer your question, no, the two pans are not the same for the 1/2 ton, tonners and big trucks and definitely not the same between the V8 and 6 cylinder engines.

Re: 46 & 47 Truck engine dust/splash shields
Kube - you are absolutely correct.
There is also a pan which fits between the frame rail under the radiator and another inside the lower part of radiator grille shell, all to improve air flow to the radiator.

I recall being surprised that that type of testing was done back then.

Cool (no pun intended). I know Ford worked hard to "solve" the flathead cooling issues so it's no surprise that they did a lot of research like this. Thanks for sharing the insight.
