Default Gas gauge not working

rebuilt gas gauge when restored my Cabby, it worked for short time..then read 0...looked down in top of tank and cork and wire was on bottom of tank..this was a new Ethanol proof cork float that came with rebuilt kit from Snyders...today I removed assembly and tested cork in gas..and yes it sinks...so made one from closed cell foam and fiberglassed it...it floats like it should...don't think their cork floats are worth a damn...Dick

Hi,

Absolutely nothing like a very complete and most honest "After Action Report".

Sincere thanks.

The alcohol seems to make um act funny. I had one that would sink with old gas and float with new gas and then go up and down like a yo yo every few miles. I put a neoprene one in several years ago, and all is well.

I used a new cork float about 15 years ago, but gave it an extra coat of shellac or something (don't recall for sure what I used) and it still works fine. I try to avoid the crap gas, but have been stuck using it a few times.

Use the Phenolic float
You can even cut into it to fit on the hanger and will still be buoyant

Alcohol dissolves Shellac !

The old cork floats worked for decades without fail. When they put the alcohol into the gasoline, the shellac would then dissolve allowing the cork to become saturated and sink to the bottom, showing an empty gas tank l

For the guys in Oz...

A commodore plastic float fits thru the gauge hole.

Problem fixed.

I assume you are out working the fields, that sounds like a good farmer fix to me!

I installed a rebuild kit from Mac's. Float isn't cork. (something synthetic ??) Been over a year -- works fine.

I welded a different end on the cork style and made it work with a brass snap on type float. Never have had any problems in 6 years.
