Default 1939 rear axle

I have a spare rear axle suppositivly for a 1939 how can I know for sure without taking the existing rear apart?Phil

First indicator would be heavier casing, (than 35/36), rear spring perches as part of the axle casing, wide 5 drums and hydraulic backing plates with nuts on the lower adjusters.

Some of these things could be swapped but for a first indication that is what I would go by.

Phil, The '39 axle has 16 teeth, the '38 has 18 teeth, otherwise identical. Nothing prevents finding an opposite set (axles and spider) in either.

Ha ha I was thinking of the whole rear end assembly. I guess that's why we call the individual axle a "halfshaft". Saves confusion.
