Default Big 2 barrel carb for my Merc.

Just finished installing and dialing in a large bore carb on my 46 Merc. The engine is a 59 block with Ross 35/16 pistons and a Scat 41/8 stroker crank. It has a Isky Max 1 cam.I built the engine more for torque than for HP because the heavy merc convert is equipped with a Columbia 2 speed rear. When I built it I installed a stock holly 94 carb, and it ran reasonably well. At Hershey I talked to Charlie NY and he indicated that he could build me a large bore stock appearing carb that my existing air cleaner would fit,but I would have to bore my intake bores out to 11/16 dia. to match the carb.I had to sleave the bores after I broke in to the exaust heat riser.Initally I had to apply the choke a bit to make the engine run properly. After discussing the problem Charlie sent me larger jets to richen the mixture. That solved the problem. The new carb made a big improvement in performance.I don,t know the application for the carb, maybe Charlie will answer that question.I just want to thank Charlie for the fantastic work! Phil

It sounds like the Holley 2110 from a Y-block?

Do you have any pictures from the boring of the manifold? I've always wondered how far you can go before hitting the exhaust passages.

Yes the Ford intake won;t take that size bore increase. The best intake ti use is the 49-53 MNerc 4 bolt intake and drill the center hole and a little filing on the others to make it fit. This is a very good carb

I'm assuming it's a 2110 from a '56 ford 272 Y-Block. 1955 and 1956 used the larger 1 1/16" venturi, however in '56 they also increased the throttle bore size.

There was also an aftermarket 2110 3 bolt carb made by Holley for performance applications that had even larger venturi's.

If it is an original Ford carb, the part number prefix will be cast on left side of float bowl... that provides enough information to ID its source.

Guys,
The carb I built for Phil is a 1 1/16 venturii '94' style carb. This is not the
later '94' style with auto choke and the additional air passages around the bores.
I think the carb started life on a 272 or 292 'Y' block truck...3 bolt....manual choke.
What Phil is not sharing is the carb went back and forth between Lehighton
Penna and Orchard Park, N.Y. to address some issues.......Phil did not give up on me
and I sure did not give up on him.

Long distance tuning....don't you just love it !

Are you referring to the spark control valve setup? AFAIK all the Y-block 94-like carbs are Holley 2110's.

Ross,
None of those carbs pictured. Passenger style air horn only bigger inside dia.
and the throttle plates are noticeably bigger in diameter than the 94. I cannot recall
if the base had the spark control boss. Again 3 bolt base and manual choke.

I didn't tell the whole story because I am somewhat embarissed about the time I took to get it done due to other projects taking priority because the merc. Ran ok with the original carb.Charlie is the one that deserves credit for having patience with me. Phil

Charlie also built me one of those carbs for my 284. A beautiful thing too....

Interesting subject. Phil, did you bore out the manifold just to accommodate the larger bore of the new carb? If so, why not use, lets say a 2" riser, with the top bored out between the carb and the manifold. That would serve your purpose for the new carb and give you the benefit of the riser. Just curious. Ken,I wanted to keep it stock appearing, even with an adapter plate you are somewhat defeating the purpose of the big throttle bores by choking them down thru the 7/8" stock manifold.Beside it really is not much of a problem if you own a machine shop !

I have the 2110 carb. on the 49 except I did it the back yard way. I used the 94 top and bottom so the orig. air filter would wood fit. Also I went from 51 to 52 jets it works real good and still gets 22 miles to the gal. Jack

The Holley 2110 is a great carb - used to run three of them on a 286 stroker engine and also two of them on a SCoT blower (reworked the tops to accept the larger bore).

Holley continued to use this carb in a very similar form all the way up into the 70's (though with a 4-bolt base) - used to call it a 'Bug Spray' for Volkswagen applications. Made it easy to find parts, rebuild kits, etc..

I'm building a new 42' Merc stroker at the moment, with an early Eddie Meyer manifold - am going to initially run two Stromber 48's, but will also try two 2110's. I plan to chassis dyno the car - will be interesting the see the torque/power curves with just a carb change.

Best of luck with your car - nice setup!

You say you built it for torque, a stock cam would have been a better choice. You would have had more torque at "street" rev range with the stock cam, by a very noticeable amount.
Why did you chose the max 1?

Phil, I have used a Rochester 2bbl on a Mercury manifold, on that 47 I had down at your place, works great. There are two sizes, early-late, the later one has good size throttle bores, should be enough for you big flattie. But nothing will run as good as your duce roadster! Chuck S.

Scooder,"There is no replacement for displacement"lol I put max1s in my 8cm power hi boy and the 36 pha.and they worked great. But hindsight being 20:20 a stock cam might have been better. The merc has 4:11 gears and really eve up great, yet will hunker down on the hills in hi Columbia without having to down shift often.Phil
