Drum incorrectly mounted to hub
I just retrieved my new drums from the machinist with a brake lathe, and he had discovered that one had not been mounted correctly. The new drums are ductile iron and the new rear hub is just to replace an early one for appearance sake. As shown in the photos, the studs don't project all the way through the drum such that the swedging tool works as intended. This is further confirmed by looking at the inside, noting that the studs are proud on the hub instead of totally flush. See also that I can insert a 0.006 feeler gauge between the hub and drum. This comes as quite a surprise since the other three drums were mounted correctly. The only thing I can imagine is that the tang on the new studs were not correctly aligned with the notch in the hub flange. Now for the repair. I presume I need to drill out the studs and replace them with new ones, but must ABSOLUTELY avoid damaging the new drum in the process. There are recent threads about removing studs, but none pertaining to all new components. Recommendations please

Re: Drum incorrectly mounted to hub
Can you send them back to whomever installed the drums?

Re: Drum incorrectly mounted to hub
Make sure you have the proper studs for cast drums, they have a longer shoulder.
Also check out these two links to Vince's site. http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/vannormanfront.htm http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/swaging.htm |
