My first opportunity to run an engine was at about age 14, and was the only remaining Greencastle traction engine that belonged to my buddy's neighbor. About 25 years ago that buddy got a 50 horse Case, have had the opportunity to be at the helm many a time, and Dave you are so right, quite a workout turning those things!

It might never be a running machine again, but I still hate to see the wheels sinking into the ground.
Too bad the owner doesn't have 4 cement pads for them.

I rarely miss our local steam show, don't know anything about them but the stories of there past are unending. Took the God Daughter to the show one year and was pointing to one as it drove by, driver stopped and asked if we wanted a ride. She was terrified but accepted, she had the time of her life and so did I. She declined the whistle blowing though. The family that owned it was named Cobb, can't thank the man enough.

For those back east here, The second weekend in October, right after Hershey, is the Blue Mtn Steam and Gas engine show at Jacktown (Bangor) Pennsylvania. Steam, Gas, Huge diesels, Aircraft. The steam shed has a bunch of old industrial one lunger with huge flywheels, Running! A few folks bring their Hit and Miss corn shellers, washing machines and whatever other labor saving devices they've been able to hook up. There is also a flea market where you can find everything from Mod A parts to Artsy - Craftsy stuff. And the best homemade Ice Cream I've ever had! Google Jacktown or go to youtube

They have a large machinery show in the fall near me, and I used to take my kids in the morning before I went to work. I always tried to stay until noon because there were always a few steam tractors there and they would all blow their whistles. It is something else to hear a half a dozen of them going off at once.
