Default 32 V8 transmission gears

Will the later 39 and up gear set fit in a 32 transmission? If so , any special modifications or specific gears ?
Thanks

The 16/28 set will fit but you’ll have to use a 39 and later shift tower.

It doesn't go together easily. The rear thrust washer has a larger diameter than the 32 style so the cluster does not drop down to get the input shaft in. Also the front of the cluster is wider than the 32 cluster also preventing it to go down. There are at least 2 methods to get around this. On is to grind off some of the synchronizer teeth on the input shaft (as was done by Ford on 39 Zephyr gears) and the other is to install the bearing on the input shaft after it is in the trans (tricky job).

For the “press on the bearing after installing the mainshaft” crowd......that’s an awkward process and always leaves you wondering if you got it all the way on. The big issue with this technique is when you or someone else has to disassemble this gearbox, they won’t be able to remove the main drive gear in reverse order. It will be a destructive process to get it out now.

Sometimes transmissions come in to our shop for a rebuild or repair and a previous builder used that technique. Now you have to pull the front ball bearing off the main drive gear somehow before you can pull the drive gear out.....good luck doing it without damaging something else.

It sounds like the best thing to do is rebuild it stock with the early gears. Thanks guys for your input.

All good info above. Aside from the serial number stamped on the bell housing, the biggest reason a 32 trans is a 32 transmission is the emergency brake mounting bosses cast into the slant back shift tower. Going to the "39 and up"gears requires the late shift tower, thus you no longer have a 32 transmission.

Some angle iron and two bungs and you've got yourself an e-brake bracket
