Engine Wood Support Cradle Stand Picture

I knew Dave had posted a picture of the wood stand he made for storing engines, but I had a hard time finding the picture. Hopefully I have enough of the right catch words in the title to make it easier to find in the future. This is a picture Dave posted, but the one I made is identical.

The other day the wind blew my spare engine over and broke the front crank pulley. I should have made this stand a week ago. I used four 2 x 6's 8 1/2" long for the uprights, and four 2 x 6's 17 inches long for the other boards. I used four #8 x 3" sheet rock screws at each joint. The distance inside the uprights (pan width) is 8". This makes a very solid engine support to work on or store the engine.

I'm cleaning the exterior of my engine and will paint it before installing it as a temporary engine. The seller at the garage sale told me his dad overhauled the engine and it sounded great for the 30 minutes I ran it while it was still mounted in the old homemade deer hauler.

Now, mount that cradle on a Harbor Freight furniture dolly, and you can roll the engine around wherever you want it.

Here's my stand in use. I had the engine setting on the small yard cart that I pull behind my Cub Cadet. I was really surprised that a gust of wind would have blown it over and broke the pulley.

BTW, this past Saturday we had our club pancake breakfast at Dave's shop south of Jordan, MN. Dave has expanded his shop and added some more equipment. He's got a really nice setup for rebuilding engines. Too bad I forgot to bring my camera.

Silly question... Do you have the latest version of Acrobat Reader?

Do you have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer? It should allow you to open any pdf file and there is no charge to download it. Very easy to install. (Do you use a Mac or a PC?) Then you should be able to view all the good Model A PDFs loaded here on FordBarn.

I made a wood engine stand with four (4) 2x4 upright wood legs on a 2x4 platform mounted on (4) casters for moving the engine around the shop.

The four (4) legs bypass both sides of the engine and extend upwards to about 48" high above the floor with (2) 2x4 transverse cross members, fore and aft, on tops of the (4) upright legs.

Once engine is securely mounted and fixed, the engine can remain upright on casters for grinding valves, cutting cylinder ridges, honing cylinders, installing pistons, installing flywheel and clutch plate with clutch, installing cam, timing gear, timing cover & installing cylinder head.

The engine can also be turned upside down while secured in this same wood frame resting on the two (2) 2x4 transverse fore and aft cross members for installing the crankshaft, adjusting main & connecting rod bearings, installing oil pump, & installing oil pan.

The upright legs are long enough to provide adequate leverage for lifting and positioning the engine right side up on casters, or easily positioning the engine upside down, and/or back and forth as required, without the use of any lifting mechanism.

Also can use this engine stand with a slight modification and a wood device for securing both rear axles in the vertical position to completely rebuild a Model A rear end with banjo and drive shaft attached.

Saw one that was just an open box, with 2" sides. He mounted the engine with the rear & front mounts, even cut a CRANK hole in the front, & could crank it.
Has anyone ever run a Model A engine, WITHOUT a flywheel???

I once used a grocery cart found abandon, I misstated cut off the basket, the four tubes holding the basket holds the engine upright, the front wheels swivel.
