My Vintique hinges and springs will not hold the hood up in the open position on my 48 Merc. Maybe they are made for Fords? Maybe the Merc's longer hood is just to heavy? I don't know but they open and close ok. I just have to use a prop to hold the hood up.

As laryh said. I have a new set of springs (unsure of maker) fitted to my '47 merc and they will not hold the hood open either, though they do take 90% of the weight out of it, making it easy to open and close. I use a prop to keep the hood open. Maybe the longer and heavier hood on the mercs overwhelms the Ford springs a little.

I tried a set of Vintique Hinges on my 48 Ford = no good , I ended up rebuilding my original hinges , I did use the Springs from the Vintiques , the Hood is great now, stays Up and Fits like it should, Vintiques are in the Chinese pile

My '41 has wave spring washers on each hood bolt with safety wire. The trick is to get the "correct" amount of tightness on each bolt to make the hood latch and stay open. I ended up doing exactly as 47 Merc with a fold down hood prop rod.

I had the same problem with my '41 after I painted it. Acted like the hood was too wide at the cowl. After adjusting it for years, replacing the hinges with NOS, I removed the spring and the hood fit like a charm. Don't know why. That why I went with a prop rod.
