New engine problems
Hi all, i dont post much but just wanted to get your thoughts on a couple of things, i recently had my 29 engine rebuilt locally, after a week of installing it in the car and wiring it up and starting it up, there seems to be 2 problems with it. 1, water is starting to leak from the head gasket, and 2 when the engine is running there seems to be a steady stream of oil coming out of bottom of the transmission where the hole is .... if i tork the head do you think that would take care of the water problem, as for the oil leak do you think someone forgot a gasket felt or something?.. any thoughts would be great. Thanks..

Have you retorqued the head after running it a while? If not do that, in proper sequence, 55ft lbs.
There shouldn't be any holes in the bottom of the transmission. If it's leaking out of the flywheel housing, you may have a bad rear main. If it's leaking between the flywheel housing and the block, the gasket around the end of the camshaft probably wasn't sealed properly. Is it leaking oil or 600w?

You can remove the lower inspection cover (3 bolts), and look up at the bearing to see if that's your problem, or if it's a poor pan installation. Or as Ray said oil running down from the cam shaft hole in rear of block.

You should be able to see a gasket between the engine and the flywheel housing, can you? Another thing to check, but not related to the current problem, did they install the shims on the top two bolts between the engine and the flywheel housing?

It may also be the tube wasn't installed that drains the rear main oil back into the pan, which will make it pour oil out the flywheel housing, or the tube could be plugged.

Fo me, It was strange! A gasket between the block and and the flywheel housing? No it can't be! Never heard of such a thing! Well without that gasket there is nothing to seal the end of the camshaft and engine oil can pour out that connection. Also, the aforementioned oil tube in the rear main. Why this should be I never fully understood. But it is! If it's missing or plugged, it will pour oil out all over the ground (Don't ask me how I know).

I found that if the gasket between the block and flywheel housing is not there, it will not leak while running but after you shut it off, watch it pour. Another voice of experience. I put one on backward, once.

I would still tell the rebuilder first. He might want to see the head gasket leaking or the oil leaking. I would not try to fix the head gasket leak but let him do that

Just an up date on the engine, pulled it, took it back to the person who rebuilt it. All the gaskets were there, but turns out that the new oil tube opening was still wrapped up from being shipped... Honest mistake i guess ...

Have your rebuilder recheck everything one more time before he releases the engine back to you. That oil tube should be secured so it can't come loose and fall out. Also make sure it isn't screwed in too far. And put some sealant on the gasket where it meets the block around the end of the camshaft when you bolt everything together.
