Re: Columbia rear end swap
if you mean the whole rear yes the whole rear will fit. onley difference is 40 has hydl. brakes. radius rods look different but if you not going for judgeing it don,t matter. you will have to use 36 wide 5 drums.if your 36 is very early the rear drums might have a different bearing dia. if that the case later 36-39 drums will work. i don,t know if your runing mech. or hydl brakes the 36 mech. backing plates will fit the 40.

Re: Columbia rear end swap
The 40 vac valve and shifting stuff on the firewall will be different than the 36 but if you have a set of 36 controls, they will work with the 40 rear end.

Re: Columbia rear end swap
The '40 Columbia will fit very nicely under a '36... With some modifications..
Use the '36 drive shaft/tube and center section. Use the '40 axles and spider gears with '37 radius bars and the '40 rear spring. The lever shocks will hook up in the original position. If you have hydraulic brakes use the backing plates you have with '38-39 drums if you want to keep the stock wheels. The use of the original mechanical brakes might require a little adaptation, however, the '37 radius bars are the same length as the '36 bars so you can mount the brake rods to the radius bars using the '36 hardware. The only problem you will have in mounting the '37 radius bars to the '36 drive shaft tube is that there is a slight difference in the length between the '36 and '37 bars.. This can be easily compensated for by placing a sleeve between the bar and the housing, then inserting a longer bolt through the whole assembly. I used a pair of large nuts as a spacer... The use of a '42-48 Columbia under a '35-36 Ford, or even later, works the same way using the '36 drive shaft tube and '37 radius bars.. The attached pix shows a '42-48 Columbia under my '36.. I converted it from an early style Columbia in 1954... I used the '42-48 electric over vacuum for switching controls.

Re: Columbia rear end swap
epw / Redneck,
A complete '40 Columbia w/ spring goes into a '35 - '40/'41 1/2 ton. As mentioned if you are using hyd brakes things go easier. Wide 5 drums switch with '40 type. I like the all pneumatic 2 way valve to control the rear....just one vac line coming off the intake to the valve and 2 lines going from the valve back to the can. I choose to not use the speedo shifter can and delicately mark the speedometer with the OD speed. Charlie ny |
