Needle and seat hang up on Stromberg 97
I have a new engine in my 34 roadster with two 97 carbs on it. It runs great...but when it sits for more then a day, when I fire it the forward carb starts pouring fuel out of the top of it (vent hole). I can tap on the top and then it is fine. I have taken the needle out and inspected it, cleaned it, ect. Still does it...anyone have any other cures? Would float level have anything to do with it? It is only the forward carb
Thanks, Chris

Is the needle the rubber tipped one? I've always heard to use the metal tips

Re: Needle and seat hang up on Stromberg 97
I learned why the air horn of one of my 97's had been crushed with a hammer ( I think my Dad was involved many years ago ).
Anyway happened to me a couple of times with pressure regulator at 2.5 psi. I moved down to 2 psi and have so far have avoided the trauma of gasoline spilling down the intake manifold.. Do you have a regulator? Lane |

New Stromberg "S" jet fuel inlets will cure it once and for all!

Chris:
I see from your photo that your bell crank linkage is set in a straight up position at rest (idle). I found that setting mine like that causes the throttle plates to be out of sync when you open them because of the geometry. Take a look down the carbs as you work the throttle open and you'll see what I mean. I set my bell cranks at around 10 o'clock at idle to cure the problem. They swing from around 10 to 2 o'clock (if they point upwards like yours). |

Re: Needle and seat hang up on Stromberg 97
I am not using a regulator and I rebuilt an original Ford furl pump that I am using. I will mess with the clock position on the arms.
Thanks guys!!

Re: Needle and seat hang up on Stromberg 97
I have been using the neoprene tip needles since they came out in the 50's..I like them because you can run the fuel pressure up to 5 lb and then the bowls don't run dry at full throttle...Assuming you have something other than a stock engine.
I have never had one leak. Many modern carbs use them so there must be something good about them. If you don't like this type of needle, you can always go floatless. |

Hey Chris,
I see you also have the same ignition wires and Rajah clips as me. Copycat! |
