Default 1917 touring rack

Did the 1917 model t touring come with a spare tire rack in the rear? Was it after market or was there one at all?

Some folks likely carried a tire tube under a seat somewhere. Jack the flat tire off the ground then with some tire irons to pry the tire bead off, the bad tube can be replaced. Pump the tire back up and jack the car down and your good to go after stowing the tools. Some may have just carried a patch kit.

Rims weren't detachable for most folks so poor folks learned to do it with minimal cost. If a person had more money, they might look for detachable rims and carry a spare on the running board next to the driver since there was no door there.

You could buy spare tire brackets that either mounted on the running board or at the rear. These would have just held tires with maybe tubes installed. In 1917, car would have still had two different sized tires so to cover your bases, you would need 2 different spare tires and maybe tubes installed along with tire irons, talc, air pump, patches, extra tubes etc. While the chances are still there, getting a flat does not happen as often today as it did back then. Better roads now and less horseshoe nails in the road.

Rubber technology was still limited too. Synthetics employed in later era were better. A lot of currently available rubber products have digressed somewhat due to lack of foreign give a crap.
