Guessing you would need to balance the complete converter. If a shop can balance a stick flywheel and clutch assy; the may be able to balance a convertor too.

I would also be concerned with warpage of the plate. I would think when they are assembled they are done so in a jig.

Be interesting to see how it turns out.

On a side note, I once had a flywheel installed and it turned out that the ring gear was no perfectly round. Would make weird noises when starting. They did replace it so turned out good.

Guys, I'll let you know how it goes next week. My welder expects to have it done on Monday and I've located a bubble balancer I gave to a friend 30 or more years ago. I won't be able to see the bubble, but I should be abe to see the lean .

Before you have it fitted you might check that there is a little step machined on the inside of the ring. When searching the vendors for this part quite a while ago I noticed that CASCO's catalog read "with correct machined step," the implication being other vendors might not. (At least that's how I read it). without the step the ring will sit a little proud and not flush with the front of the converter. This in turn would move the rear of the gear away from the starter by the same tiny amount. Probably would not have any effect on starting capabilities, but might make the welding process harder. Just a thought.

Well, I got it back from my welder who is an amazing craftsman. His welds are on the same spots as the original and all 10 are virtually identical in size. I still haven't found my old bubble balancer as the friend I gave it to is fighting with very bad cancer. I've taken it to several very competent shops who are all puzzled. If it had a through hole, no problem, but with the center covered with the cup, they scratch their heads.

So while I'm working on this, I rebuilt the steering box. What oil is recommended for a steering box??

For the steering box I use straight STP. Others recommend John Deere cornhead grease.
