1934 Ford 3 window vs. 1934 Ford 5 window
My restoration project of my avatar 1934 Ford 3 window, while becoming very expensive, is coming along fairly well.
I do have a question - Did both the 1934 Ford 3 window and 5 window coupes have the rear window that cranked down? I have been told that possibly one of the two did not have that feature. Now back to the shop for another few weeks. |

Re: 1934 Ford 3 window vs. 1934 Ford 5 window
ALL of the 34 3-W and 5-W have the roll down rear window. The window is for ventilation not for the purpose of talking to any one in the rumble seat. BOTH cars with a trunk and a rumble seat have the roll down window. If your car has the drip tray under the window area, this is only part of the assembly. There is a wood frame around the window area and the glass channels fit inside the wood, the window regulator fits inside the wood just under the window opening.

Roll down rear window in 34 is how I talk to people riding in the rumble seat.

Re: 1934 Ford 3 window vs. 1934 Ford 5 window
Interesting - Where would one go to find out why or why not one coupe would have a roll down over the other style? If both have rumble seats, as does mine, then shouldn't they both have a means to talk to the rear passengers? JMHO

Re: 1934 Ford 3 window vs. 1934 Ford 5 window
David J, my 1934 3 window is fully apart. I will try to remember to get a picture for you of the rear window or what is left of it at this point.
The window does have its own channels like the doors do. There is a large "box" under the window that catches the water and it has a drain pipe out the right lower side. That pipe bends downward about 3 to 4 inches where then a rubber hose (?) continues the drain. Of course, my "rubber hose" or whatever was supposed to be there, long ago rotted away. Then as you might have figured out, the water drained under the rumble floor mats and walllla! Rust under that mat in the floor boards. So now I have a complete new floor from back to front including the firewall which was apparently damaged in a frontal crash many, many years ago and never correctly repaired. This is getting to be a long drawn out project but I am sure learning about Henry and his ideas, silly or not. I hope to have this girl sealed up so tight that no drop of water can get into it ever again or at least not on my watch. |

Re: 1934 Ford 3 window vs. 1934 Ford 5 window
Oh yes, I am still interested in knowing if the 5 window coupes had roll down rear windows?
If not did they ever come with rumble seats? Then... IF they (the 5 window cps) had rumble seats, and no roll down rear windows, just how did you talk to the rumble passengers???? |

My 34 5-w coupe has always had a trunk, and it has always had a roll down rear window.

My 34 has roll down window with rumble seat and has a box with drain pipe and rubber extension which drains water out the passenger side inside the rear wheel well.

Re: 1934 Ford 3 window vs. 1934 Ford 5 window
Thanks but pics aren't needed as I am quite familiar with the back window setup on 33-34 coupes . My first post was looking to see how his had been modified to NOT have a roll down window . I've seen these with fixed rear windows before but it was nothing done by Ford . The first post by Terry OH gave the right answer as all 33-34 coupes had roll down rear windows as far as my experience goes .

Re: 1934 Ford 3 window vs. 1934 Ford 5 window
1933 & 1934 Ford coupes were listed as available without or with a rumble seat. The rumble seat was an EXTRA COST OPTION costing around $40.00. I have a 1934 deluxe Australian built 5 window with both rumble seat and wind down rear window. I have studied these coupes for 45 years plus and observed rumble & trunk fitted cars with and without the wind down rear windows. However most without the wind down rear window were 1933 cars and more likely to be standard models. I have much literature on these cars and wind down rear windows are barely mentioned. About all is stated is its purpose was for ventilation or air flow and not mentioned was conversation with rumble seat passengers. Maybee now and then some assembly plants ran out of rear window winder assemblies and so did not fit them, who knows ??. That's my two cents worth anyway. Regards, Kevin.

Re: 1934 Ford 3 window vs. 1934 Ford 5 window
I know this is an old post, But it sparked my interest and reminded me of a recent conversation about How many So called Early Ford experts there are out there Who Never worked in a Ford plant And Most likely wasn't even Born when these Cars were being made. Anyhow I can tell you for sure that Not all 1933 ford Coupes had roll down rear windows, As I had a 33 five window body with a fixed back window, At first I thought maybe Someone later made it that way, But the Garnish molding was about 3/8 wider than all the other coupe rear window garnish moldings I ever seen, Not sure if it was a Canada or overseas Car, But it was factory that way.

Re: 1934 Ford 3 window vs. 1934 Ford 5 window
I for one am very interested in this . Heard this before but never saw the example talked about . If true I would really like to ask some questions about how it was done . Definitely seen 33 coupes with fixed rear windows before but nothing Ford did . ADDING Have you ever looked at a 33 sedan delivery rear window garnish molding ?

Re: 1934 Ford 3 window vs. 1934 Ford 5 window
As a side question here. Is the rear window regulator the same as one of the door window regulators such as in a Model A, or is it unique only to the rear window?

They are similar, but the length of the arm is unique, which can be either shortened or lengthened without a lot of effort.

Re: 1934 Ford 3 window vs. 1934 Ford 5 window
all 3wds. were deluxe, so they had the role down wd. but ,I think the 5wd. standard did not have the role down wd.

Re: 1934 Ford 3 window vs. 1934 Ford 5 window
I notice as usual no evidence or even explantion is forthcoming here - just spew .
I definitely did not help built any new 33-34 coupes nor have I owned or seen all of them . Yes I have been around these long enough to know NOBODY knows all . That said why is it so hard for the non-rolldown believers to show or explain how it was done ? I would like to know as the normal window box is not real adaptable to a glass sealed against the body like a 5w quarter window . Definitely seen 33-34 coupes with fixed rear glass done both nicely and just glued to the lip but nothing done by Ford . Also 33 3w standards are not that rare . The reference in post 19 to a wider than normal rear garnish for a coupe sounds to me like a sedan delivery one . I really am curious about this as I am not aware of any FACTORY DONE EXAMPLES and if valid I would like to know how they did it . David J |
