Removing 1948 Ford Conv. Trans.
What is best way to remove trans. on my 48 ford Conv with the x frame. I had rather not remove engine if possible.
Thanks Steve |

frame on jackstands, rear wheels removed.
Drop the rear end, roll back on hubs. Remove front seat and floorboards. Cover interior with drop cloth. Drain transmission fluid. Pull transmission up and out.

I'll add just one thing to Alan's post. Don't forget to support the engine at the rear with something like a bottle jack and 2x4. Have fun.

Vic, Thanks for the add-on!
I knew I'd left out a lot, but that's not a detail you'd want to forget!

Re: Removing 1948 Ford Conv. Trans.
Maybe a little more... (I've got a 47 conv)... I didn't have to remove the seat. I'd consider that optional, maybe a good idea if you want more room, or have a show car. And, on mine, I found it very beneficial to remove the u-joint, and the rear trans mount bracket from the trans, before lifting it out. Side cover was a little 'dicey', but I got trans out with side cover still on trans.
side note... if you take the trans rear mount bracket off, use one of its bolts with a flatwasher (the u-joint flatwasher), to hold the rear bearing in place. JMO Forgot... If someone has been there before you, might find a long hose (normal front hose) for the rear brakes. If so, can drop rear end & move back, without disconnecting brake hose. To remove the rear axle (skip the last 4 lines): To remove the transmission after removing the rear axle: Then to replace the rear axle (again, skip the 1st 4 lines): Note: Disconnecting and connecting springs can be a little tricky. Here is the procedure by the book. Other's may do it differently.
