Default '32 Model B Transmission, thrust washer

I'm replacing the second gear on my '32 model b transmission and I can't get the thrust washer to slip over the second gear lock on the main shaft. See pictures for reference. Any suggestions/ ideas would be welcomed.

Was it were it belonged before tear-down?

J. Franklin,

Yes. The first picture shows prior to tear-down.

J. Frankline,

I should also clarify. I'm using, The Ins and Outs of Early Ford Transmissions by Mac Van Pelt and that book shows the thrust washer under the second gear lock on the main shaft.

It looks like you are trying to install the thrust washer with the thrust washer key in place. That won't work. The washer has to be in place in the groove in the main shaft and then rotated to create an opening for the thrust washer key. The thrust washer key must be inserted initially so as to clear the groove so that the thrust washer can be inserted fully and rotated.
