late 31 gas tank on earlier flat firewall question
Good morning. Has anyone any experience using the later 31 tank with a standard 1930 non indented firewall? I got a great deal on this tank and like the dash mounted column drop for safety. I'm assuming I will just use NPT brass or copper nipple to go through the firewall and then use the late firewall mounted fuel shutoff. Looks like 1/2" to me, but will not get back to the car untill the weekend. If you have actually done this, or have any tips, or know exactly what size/material extension I should look for I would appreciate it. EDIT; looks like bronze would be out of the question, so 1/2" copper pipe? Greg

Never done that, just be sure the fuel outlet reaches the earlier firewall. The column drop will go into your earlier car without modifications necessary.

Page 560 of the Service Bulletins shows how to do this.

Re: late 31 gas tank on earlier flat firewall question
Jim, indeed the stock outlet is a couple inches short of the firewall. I am not concerned about retaining an absolute original look. I will need to drill new hole in firewall as the outlet is located differently. I am running a fuel pump and regulator, so I could just use another fuel shutoff down on frame before the filter and pump, but would like to use the stock shutoff on the firewall. Although, it may not be possible to get a flush fit, possibly have the shutoff a couple inches off the firewall, depending on the pipe and adapter I can find. Does that sound within reason? Thanks.

I think you could make an adapter from a 3/8" pipe nipple and a coupling.

Look up mounting the '31 steering support in earlier cars that has been posted here before and leave the firewall alone along with any cobbling of pipe work. Just my opinion.

Mike and Ruth. Its a late 31 tank. You missed the point of my question. The column support is not the problem, the fuel outlet is.

About 10-15 years ago, I had a customer's 1930 Coupe that came in that had this modification done and it had that adapter that at the time I assumed was home-built until I later read that in the S/B. It should not be that hard to replicate it as it is the same dimensions as the tank outlet (-7/8th inches O/D??) so the grommet will seal the Dash (firewall) from engine compartment fumes. The one end is threaded 3/8" Pipe and the opposite end is bored with 3/8th" I/D Pipe threads. The overall length is about 2.000". Someone with a lathe and about 6.000" of bar stock should be able to fabricate an authentic looking adapter in about 30-45 minutes. |

Re: late 31 gas tank on earlier flat firewall question
Thanks Brent. I may just use a pipe nipple and coupler to get me up and running. I like the idea of making the part, but my guess it would then be a $100 part! Open to any ideas!
