In 1975 I left work with my grease gun on the roof of my 65 Corvair.
A half mile down the road my foreman caught up with me to let me know.

One day I left my gas cap on the passengers running board.
As I was driving along I could smell gas and looking at the gas fill opening I knew why.
When I pulled over the cap was right there where I had left it.

On a tour some years ago a member with a '31 phaeton had his original quail take flight. We all stopped to look for it but his wife found it on the right running board right behind the side mount!

I went to Home Depot to get sackcrete 6 bags, -- had ca crowd watching, and saying your not going to put them in the car-- as I flopped them on the running boards-- they ride good, and I drove across the yard to the project so I didn't have to carry them far

My daughter's PT Cruiser had a flat. I took the tire to the shop on the running board. It sure confused the guys at the tire shop.

Those running boards are damned useful. There is certainly no better place to sit and eat a sandwich.

My father in law used to tell of when his family had a general store. He often had to deliver bags of wheat, pollard, bran etc. The best place for them was just thrown in between the side of the bonnet and the mudguard, just behind the headlight bar. They'd ride there for miles with no sign of moving.

"the bonnet and the mudguard" Is that what we Yanks refer to as the hood and fenders?

I did that once with my 1929 Hudson Coupe. A small box with very important papers went all over the intersection! Then folks got out of their cars and helped. Hey, this is California...I don't knock it ALL the time.
