Timing gear oil or no oil??

Do you oil the timing gear,crank gear, or leave dry???

I cannot find the correct answer in my reference books. But, I did find some relevant recommendations in that area. They are quoted below:

"Place a dab of light grease on the end of the camshaft."
"Oil the camshaft thrust plunger, plunger spring, and the hole that the plunger and spring fit into with plenty of oil. Make sure that the oil hole for the camshaft thrust plunger in the front timing gear cover is not stopped up.
"The thrust plunger has an 'X' groove cut in its face that rides against the end of the camshaft. Do not fail to put grease on the end of this plunger or it will make noise."

While not relevant to your question, it is textbook advice as to your next step that may be helpful.

The timing gears run in a FLOOD of oil, dumped over from the oil reservoir from what looks like a chunk, broken out of the front reservoir wall!

(Sumbody must have been wurried about enough oil to the gears on Minerva. Someone put a 1/16" tubing, running from the block pressure outlet, to a drilled bolt in the side timing cover!
Somewhere, I read that it was a FIX for poor oiling on OLD FORD TRACTORS???)

thanks aware of this but not about timing gears thanks again all good advise.should grease or oil be used,? do you think.

Put some assembly grease on both when you put them reassemble them. Then the oil will take over when it starts running.

I will be pulling an engine this weekend. I will face this same issue in the near-term. I couldn't find your answer in the books I have. It would seem that something compatible with the engine oil is a must. Assembly grease sounds reasonable. I hope one of the rebuilders who frequents this forum can give us a name or specs., synthetic or not, long fiber or short fiber, etc.

Aw, jist give the gears some shots of motor oil, so the fiber teeth don't "gall" in the first few revolutions, until oil from the oil chamber starts falling down. SURE don't to have some LONG fibre or GUCKY grease to get down into the oil pump screen!!! This is a simple straight forward replacement of parts, jist use plain old common sense & don't "OVER-ENGINEER" STUFF!! Save your ENGINEERING SKILLS fur REALLY complicated stuff, like changing spark plugs, ur trying to decide which is the BACK ur the FRONT uf yo' DEPENDS!!!!!!! (Buster T's LAFFIN' like an IDIOT!!)

You can soak the fiber gear in motor oil before installing it. That way it is well lubed and no worries on start up.

Bill it sounds like someone put on one of the timing gear oilers. Not needed but someone's that if improvement and necessity zwhich is not needed
The timing gear gets a little splash and plenty of
Crankcase fumes to be lubricated
A little grease on the plunger prior to install is always a good thing to do

I pour a generous amount of oil over the gears and plunger.

If you DO want to grease the teeth, use Vaseline, it will melt & mix O.K. with the motor oil & NOT clog up the oil pump screen. It's commonly used in assembling automatic transmissions. John G. once did an automatic, using the old white Lubriplate, what a MESS, valves sticking & screen partially clogged, because that crap wouldn't melt & blend with the oil!!! He had to take it out & COMPLETELY disasemble it to clean it out!!

I grease the plunger and spring with whatever grease is handy at Walmart, I usually prefer the slick 50 grease. I would never use grease with fiber in an engine. The timing gears get plenty of oil, real quick. I don't pour oil on the timing gears. No need in making a worse oily mess.
