Default 39 Rear Axle

Folks,
If I decide to do away with the Columbia 2speed, what year axle assembly would fit my 39 Ford Standard Coupe?
Thanks
Tom

Why are you doing away with the Columbia? That is what everyone wants!

Steve asked a good question. Why do away with your Columbia?

Tom, So, if I understand correctly, you want to swap out the ENTIRE rear axle assembly, not simply the Columbia parts. Correct?

If so, any '39 - '40 assembly will bolt in.
An easier and no doubt more cost effective way, if you desire, is to simply remove the Columbia "stuff". In that scenario, all you need is the right side axle housing. They are plentiful and cheap.

Except for slight width differences '35 - '40 & '41 light truck. '35 - '36 and early '37 have the benefit of a tubular driveshaft therefore no pita center bearing but many are 4:11. I think many '38's are 3:78 and most '39 & '40 are 3:78. Don't forget about the wide five drums.

You did not ask but I will volunteer....there are lots of 'extra' parts in a Columbia to please drivers of yesteryear which aren't relevant today. I have a simple pneumatic valve that shifts the Col from high to low... one hose from the intake to supply vac to the valve and two hoses from the valve to the Col. I eliminated the speedo quick change and add 12 mph to the speedometer when in high mentally (?).. Dan Krehbiel in Calif is my encyclopedia on Columbias....he also can source or has the unobtainium goodies....like the leathers and internal guts. I'll PM his info if you wish, at the least Dan is fun to talk with and a dear friend of mine.

Thanks Charlie, please do. I have spoken to John at Columbia 2sp Parts.
The issue why I’m contemplating removing the Columbia is that I believe the planetary has gone for a dump. I will continue to drive her until fall/winter, then take it apart and see how bad it is. One issue will be expense, cause shipping alone to Canada can be real pricey. Thanks again for all your input.

In case you need to know, the 1940 car rear wheel mounting surface measurement from drum to drum is 59 1/2 in.

A bit more FYI... IF you choose to swap out the entire differential / axle housings, etc. 35 - 36 have different housings.

From what you'd shared thus far, I would think the best route would be to repair the Columbia. Repaired correctly, you'll have a heck of a good unit under the car.
John Connelly is my go to guy for Columbia. Still, Krehbiel is a # guy as well. Ya can't miss either way.

Charlie, You are of course correct. There is no mystery to building a proper Columbia. Having the proper parts is key. Putting it together is simple.
