When driving my 55 i have about 3 inches of play either way thus making it difficult to steer...Can i take a bit of this out with the set screw on top of the steering box or??..Thanks in advance..

Sounds like too much play to take up with a steering box adjustment. I would be checking the front end components. With the weight of the car on the front end, have a helper move the steering wheel back and forth slowly to take up the play and you watch all steering components.

When i had a 48 ford pickup, I had the same problem. I was able to remove a shim from the steering box and it worked for me...no more play. Terry

The locking screw on top of the steering box does not take play out of the steering wheel. You have to loosen the four small bolts on the front of the box and rotate the plate clockwise. Do not make big adjustments. Move it no more than a sixteenth 1/16" of and inch at a time. Check play after each minute adjustment.
