Default engine degreasing/fuel pump Q

Hi All,

I would like to degrease my Y block without creating an Exxon Valdese oil spill in my driveway/creek. I do have a plastic kiddie pool that I can put the engine in, soak and spray down to collect the water/degreaser.

But what do you recommend I use to collect the oil/grease that comes off? I need to dispose of it somehow. I can do this in the drive as well if I can find something to collect the oil like a berm or something.

Also, is this a stock 57 ford fuel pump? Can it be rebuilt or do I need to get a brand new one. I am assuming the rubber diaphragm is toast-but I also know what assume stands for.

Thanks,

Mike

It looks like a standard dual diaphragm pump, needing a separate inline filter. It has a vacuum booster on top to help the vacuum windshield wiper motor work more consistently.

If that one no longer functions there are good quality ethanol compatible rebuild kits available, but may take some looking.
The recent crop of defective off-shore new replacements supplied by Airtex aren't worth the trouble... # 4406, and assembled specifically with Phillips head screws.

The best I’ve done for spraying/degreasing is heavy plastic and the oil absorbing rolls they sell for spill control on job sites. It’s still a mess, and then how do you dispose of the whole works? Wish I had a better answer.

Is the engine going back into the car or is it going to be rebuilt?

Fuel Pump Kit - http://www.classicpreservation.com/fuelpumpkits.html

Don't let the present pump go to the rebuild barrel.

I am thinking g of pulling the heads and sending them to Tim McMaster for a refresh. But (and so far I have two indicators this engine has never been opened) if the bearings are good she will get buttoned up and stuffed. If I can rebuild or send this pump out to get rebuilt then I will. I don’t trust the Chinese stuff as far as I can throw it.

Well, GUNK used to be the go-to but it has kerosene and stinks. Hard to hide. You will need either steam or a pressure washer.

Do you have a hoist? Possibly suspend the engine with the pool below and catch as much as you can?

Might be best to go at it with a scraper and then blast it. The scrapings could then be bagged.

Have you thought of self serve car wash. Check with owner first, some have the outside stalls for this and a grease and sand trap. Used to be common around here. The one down the street from me I've noticed a selection for engine degreaser for the spray wand. Be sure to wear a rain coat and face shield, engines liked to be washed about as much as a Tom cat.

There is a good idea. MD EPA put a stop to that. Here in W(BY GOD) V, I was talking with a manager and he said auto recyclers would come in and drop the fuel and lubricants into the drain. A camera caught them finally. And then you have your 4WD owners that leave the stalls a muddy mess. They stopped that also.

Maybe a large plastic tarp under the pool? I am sure you don't want that mess on your property.

as was said steam or high pressure hot water and soap is about the only way to clean today.when it comes to cleaning theres nothing on the market any good but they still sell it.

Original pumps were AC. These should be rebuildable. Other brands may not be.

These are some rebuilders that I have come across. Haven't done business with any of them.

Did your wife tell you about the Simple Green? If so, good thing you listened this time.

No, the only thing she tells me is she has a headache ...

I found SIMPLE GREEN years ago as it was not caustic to the environment and didn't make the car smell like kerosene.

As long as the run-off is contained you are good to go.

I would not stick my paws into a greasy engine bay. It had to be cleaned.

Ran across a post on the Hamb about using Easy Off oven cleaner for degreasing an engine. Gave it a try and it worked great on a 302 I was bringing back to life. Works like regular spray degreasers. Spray it on and brush the thicker areas of crud. I was gonna use my power washer to clean it off but my garden hose worked just fine. It's toxic so you need to do it outside.

X2 on the simple green,
what I like about it is, it works well with water
so once you rinse and find you missed a spot
hit again with the simple green.
and then your left with a rather sweet smell under your hood.

Yep I did simple green and the gel/grease started coming off. So when I get her on an engine stand I will keep going.
