Gilmore visit: any tips?
Hi
I plan on visiting the Gilmore museum in Michigan this August. Any tips from those that have been: How much time should I allow? Any recommendations for hotel/motel? Thanks Al |

Relix Riot is August 21st, the Red Barns Spectacular is the first Saturday in August.
There's a lot to see I'd plan on most of the afternoon. There is an old diner there that you can eat at, and if you do go to a car show you also get full access to the mesuem. |

The Four Points Sheraton in Kalamazoo is the closest chain hotel. There are 1-2 bed and breakfast places on Gull Lake which is much closer to the Museum. Bring comfortable shoes as there are 10 buildings, close to 500 cars and it is spread out on the 90 acre campus.

Re: Gilmore visit: any tips?
If you are only into Model A's then plan for at least a couple hours. If you enjoy all sorts of antique vehicles then plan for at least one day. What ever you decide remember that it won't be enough.
Gilmore is unlike anything else in the antique car hobby. Like a good meal, take your time and enjoy it. The folks at the museum have a passion for antique cars. A495 was on display at the MAFFI Model A Museum for two years. They have a number of vehicles spaces that are used for a rotating display of different Model A's. My Phaeton was very well taken care of during its stay. I've been there several times and would love to go back a few more times. By the way, the Model A Days swap meet is one of the best. A swap meet enthusiast's dream...a swap meet with only Model A parts! |

There is a Holiday Inn Express in Hastings, Mi, about 15 miles north of the museum.

Re: Gilmore visit: any tips?
After the MARC Convention this year I made the journey over there the long way around. It was late in the day when I arrived so I went back up to Hastings and stayed overnight. Got up early the next morning and was there waiting for them to open. It’s everything and more from what everybody here has mentioned. I asked if I could get a picture of my Midel A in front of the Model A building and they told me to go get my car bring it in and drive anywhere I want. I was told they have some big events there filling a lot of the camp ground.

If interested in Jewelry, The store may still have Fordite earrings, etc. The ladies love the different colors. Give yourselves lots of time. It is a great visit. Study ahead as to what types of cars you want to see. Be prepared. Ice cream sodas are great in the diner. Nest doorish is the hood ornament collection. Fab.

Re: Gilmore visit: any tips?
My wife and I spent two days there and I could have stayed longer. We were the only ones in their RV park which is right next to everything. I consider this to be the best car museum that I have ever visited.

Re: Gilmore visit: any tips?
To all of those that have the Gilmore Car Museum on their bucket list(everyone should), there are many other things to see close by that should be considered as well while you are in the area. There is a very nice aviation Museum in Kalamazoo called the AirZoo. South Bend, IN has the Studebaker Museum. Auburn, IN has the Auburn, Cord, Deusenberg Museum, NATMUS, and the Ford V8 Museum, and the Detroit area has numerous auto Museums including Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum. This could easily fill up a week that will put your mind in automotive history overload.

Re: Gilmore visit: any tips?
Not much to add other than every comment is spot on. LOTS of cool stuff there. You can easily spend a day no problem and then some. We did what Jerry Kzoo says, spent a day in South Bend, hit the Studebaker museum, and a day at the the Gilmore. After that was a day on the lake to keep my wife happy. Next trip will be to the ACD museum and the Henry Ford. My wife isnt into cars so 2 museums in one trip is the limit.
